Choosing the UEFA Champions League Top Goalscorers
When it comes to predicting who will be the top goalscorer in the Champions League 2021-22, there are a few factors that need to be considered. After all, a forward is only as good as the players behind who feed him the ball.
To arrive at our top predictions for players who can score the most goals in the competition, I looked at:
The group they are in
Their prospects of reaching the knockouts and latter rounds
Past performance in the European competitions
Overall player form
With that in mind, let’s take a look at some possible 2021-22 Champions League top goalscorer predictions. You will find great odds on these players across the available online football betting sites in India.
PSG have got a good chance of winning the treble this season in Europe and one of the prime reasons for that is the arrival of Lionel Messi.
The little maestro has numerous accolades to his name, including six Ballon d’Or and six European Golden Shoe awards. As a four-time Champions League winner – one of which was with his fellow PSG team-mate Neymar, he has an immaculate pedigree in the competition and when in the form, he can score goals with absolute ease.
It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that in his final years at Barcelona, Messi was singlehandedly driving the team forward. Alas, you can only do so much at the end.
But here at PSG, he has a host of quality players to support him like Angel di Maria, Neymar, Mauro Icardi, Marco Veratti, Georginio Wijnaldum, and many more.
To put it simply, Messi has got everything he needs to score.
Placed in Group A with Manchester City, RB Leipzig, and Club Brugge, Paris Saint-Germain are more than likely to reach the knockouts and have got a few decent fixtures where they can get their goal engine running.
21-year-old Erling Haaland was the top goalscorer in Champions League last season with 10 goals for Borussia Dortmund, even though the team went as far as the quarterfinals.
The fact remains that the Norwegian forward is an absolute beast when it comes to scoring. Haaland has made it abundantly clear that he wants to score more goals and has made the same evident in his performance and work ethic. In fact, he is one of those players who can singlehandedly shape the course of the match.
In the U-20 FIFA World Cup in 2019, Haaland singlehandedly scored nine goals in a single match against Honduras and won the Golden Boot in the competition – despite Norway being knocked out in the Group Stages.
As for his form in the current season, he has already got three goals to his name in Bundesliga for Dortmund. That said, in the Champions League, the German side have been handed a tricky group with the likes of Sporting CP, Ajax, and Besiktas.
On paper, Borussia Dortmund remain favourites to reach the round of 16 at the very least.
Up next on my Champions League Top Goalscorer Predictions list is Romelu Lukaku of Chelsea.
The reason for this is simple – not only Chelsea are one of the favourites to win the Champions League this season, but also Lukaku is a much better striker than he was in his last stint with the Blues.
Since leaving Chelsea in 2014, he has moved on to become Belgium’s all-time leading goalscorer and also won the Bronze Boot in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. His last stint was with Inter Milan where he scored 47 goals in two seasons – 24 last year to help propel the Italian side to their first Serie A title in almost a decade. Lukaku was also the second-highest goalscorer in the league last season.
Now back at Stamford Bridge, he finds himself in a team that has a solid defence and some quality players in the midfield who can help him with the goals.
Chelsea have also got a relatively comfortable group with a depleted Juventus, Zenit Saint Petersburg of Russia, and Malmo FF from Sweden.
A good number of goals in the Bayern Munich camp over the last several seasons have come off Robert Lewandowski’s boots. To be more precise, the Polish forward has 222 appearances for the German champions in which, he has scored 208 goals and counting.
In addition to a plethora of individual awards he has bagged during his years with Bayern Munich, he was also the top goalscorer in the Champions League 2019-20 – the year when the Germans won the competition (and the treble) on the back of Lewandowski’s 15 goals.
So it certainly stands to reason that the 33-year-old can reach the same pinnacle once again. After all, Munich have a new manager in Julian Nagelsmann and a competitive squad with the likes of Serge Gnarby, Kingsley Coman, Thomas Muller, and Joshua Kimmich.
The Bavarians are placed in the same group as Barcelona, Benfica, and Dynamo Kyiv, thus giving Lewandowski a good opportunity to add more goals to his tally.
We had to mention another PSG player in our predictions for the Champions League top goalscorer for the 2021-22 season – and the obvious choice here was Neymar.
We could have gone with Kylian Mbappe but Neymar seemed to be a better pick (despite coming at a higher price).
It all comes down to the chemistry he shares with Messi. When he was at Barcelona with the Argentinean and Luis Suarez, the trio formed a goal-scoring machine that moved on to win the continental treble in 2014-15.
After joining the Parisians, he has guided them to three Ligue 1 titles and Coupe de France trophies, in addition to leading the side to their first-ever Champions League final in the 2019-20 season. While they lost the final by 1-0, Neymar’s presence in the team that season was instrumental.
Now with Messi (and other new arrivals including Sergio Ramos) by his side, the Brazilian striker can fancy himself a run to the European Cup Golden Boot.
A player that needs no introduction, Cristiano Ronaldo is back where he started – at the Old Trafford with Manchester United.
Since leaving the club in 2009 for Real Madrid (and later Juventus), he has won the Champions League four times with the Los Galacticos (thrice in a row), in addition to bagging the same number of Ballon d’Or awards.
In his last season with Juventus, Ronaldo was the leading goalscorer in Serie A with 29 goals – the year before, he was the second-highest scorer with 31. The 36-year-old Portuguese also won the Euro Cup in 2016 and the Nations League in 2018-19.
Given that there is no shortage of talent in the Manchester United side, the boys, now powered by Ronaldo at the front, are more than equipped to deliver a good performance in the European Cup this season.
