England v West Indies 1st Test Day 3: All 3 Results Very Much Alive

English cricket squad during the Windies tour 1st Test

The First Test between England and the West Indies at the Rose Bowl in Southampton is beautifully poised at the end of Day Three.

The Windies bowled beautifully to restrict England to just 204 after stand-in skipper Ben Stokes won the toss and decided to have a bat. In the end it was his own 43 that was the top score and what gave the hosts’ total some respectability.

Rory Burns battled hard for his 30 and Jos Buttler contributed with a quick 35 but there wasn’t much else to speak of. Just two Windies bowlers took wickets with skipper Jason Holder getting six and Shannon Gabriel grabbing four of his own.

In response, the Windies were disciplined and focussed in getting to 318, a priceless lead of 114 after the second innings. Kraig Brathwaite (65) and Shane Dowrich (61) both passed fifty while all-rounder Roston Chase hit a composed 47. Having shone with the bat, England also have Stokes to thank for not allowing the Windies to get a few more.

Roston Chase will still have a big role to play with the ball.

Stokes was also their top bowler with four wickets, while James Anderson bowled well to get three and spinner Dom Bess showed control to return figures of two for 52.

England then had half an hour or so left to bat at the end of day three and didn’t lose any wickets to end the day on 15/0.

Stokes’ men will surely do their best to bat all day tomorrow and try to build a lead of at least 270 before even thinking of declaring.

But that sort of lead looks a long way off right now and someone like Stokes (again), Rory Burns or Ollie Pope will need to get to at least 70 if they’re to get to the sort of score that may be too many for the Windies to chase.

All three results are very much on the cards, including the draw.

If England were to set the Windies 250 or more, the tourists’ first priority would be to avoid defeat rather than going for glory.
