Kings XI Punjab
It’s one win from two and it could easily be two from two. Tipped by many to finish rock bottom in the Group Stages, the Kings XI are proving plenty wrong already with two strong displays mostly on the back of impressive efforts from their two openers.
We all know how good KL Rahul is in this format and he hit the first century of this IPL on Thursday but Mayank Agarwal has been good, too. Scores of 89 and 26 are starting to suggest he can be as effective in this format as he is in Tests.
The disappointment so far has been Glenn Maxwell, who hasn’t got going in two games and they’ll need more from him.
With the ball Sheldon Cottrell, Murugan Ashwin and Mohammad Shami all played their part but they’ll continue to be looking at the possibility of bringing in spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman, possibly at the expense of James Neesham.
Rajasthan Royals
So far so good for Rajasthan. One game one win and that was against the ever-dangerous Chennai Super Kings of MS Dhoni.
In truth, the game could hardly have gone any better for them. Sanju Samson (74 off 32) played the sort of innings you’re lucky to play once every two years as a T20 batsman and Steve Smith, in his first-ever appearance as a T20 opener, was highly impressive as well with 69 off 47. Even Jofra Archer, batting at 9, joined the party with a quickfire 27 off 8 that included four sixes.
In defending their total, they did enough. They still conceded 200 runs but never really looked like losing the game and the spin of R Tewatia was particularly effective, the 27-year old claiming three wickets.
Let’s see if they can win again if they don’t start so brightly this time.
There’s still no Ben Stokes but Jos Buttler should slot straight back into the side with David Miller likely to make way.
