West Indies to win: Why is this a good bet?

West Indies have put up another dominant display in North Sound, this one resulting in them effectively winning the series. With an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, the hosts will look for a complete whitewash and avenge their ODI series loss to Sri Lanka last year.

Their openers, namely Shai Hope and Evin Lewis have been in a phenomenal form. With back to back brilliant, consistent innings from both of them, their batting attack has never looked this good.

Bowling wise, the likes of Holder and Mohammed too have been superb with 8 wickets between them in the last two games.

Now, Sri Lanka were not that bad in the second ODI – after all, the game came down to the wire and West Indies won the match only in the final over with only 2 balls to spare. The Lankans had every chance to win this match and level the series, but West Indies were simply too good.

They are superior in every aspect to their Sri Lankan counterparts and are more than likely to win this match too.

Evin Lewis to score 30+ runs: Why is this a good bet?

Lewis scored 65 off 90 balls in the first match and 103 off 121 in the second (the latter bagging him the Man of the Match award). The 29-year-old has been simply sensational in the series so far and looks in brilliant form.

Lewis has been truly phenomenal with the bat in the series against Sri Lanka

At odds of 1.8 and above, it is one of those ‘safe’ bets where the odds of the event occurring are fairly high. In other words, judging by his recent form, Lewis looks on track to score at least 30 runs.

It is for the same reason that we predict this match to see a half-century. The first ODI saw 5 half-centuries while the second one saw 4. Logic dictates that the third one is bound to be along the same lines too.

Third ODI Preview: West Indies looking for absolute dominance

Around January 2020, West Indies were in Sri Lanka, incurring a 3-0 defeat in the ODI series to the Lions. A little over a year later, the Caribbean team is on track to beautifully avenge that defeat.

The second ODI (which saw 3 of our 4 predictions get right) had it all – brilliant innings by Sri Lanka and an equally superb play in response by West Indies.

West Indies won the toss and chose to bowl. Sri Lank started on a wobbly noted with their opening batsmen (save Danushka Gunathilaka) falling cheaply in single digits.

Gunathilaka, combined with Dinesh Chandimal, added some substance to the side and put up a respectable target on the board. Danushka’s 96 and Chandimal’s 71 helped Sri Lanka get to 273 runs for 8 wickets. PWH de Silva also had a cameo in the end with 47 off 31 balls.

West Indies won the second ODI; will start third ones as the favourite

When they came on the defend the total, Sri Lanka soon found their hopes getting diminished by every over. Thanks to Lewis and Hope’s brilliant partnership, West Indies looked in absolute control right from the get-go.

Sri Lanka got their first breakthrough in the 38th over when Lewis fell after scoring the century. Moments later, Hope fell too and suddenly things looked up for Sri Lanka. West Indies were 194/2 but by then, the damage was more or less done.

In the safe, experienced hands of Nicholas Pooran, Darren Bravo, and Kieron Pollard, West Indies scraped through to a close, narrow victory.

Heading into this third match, the hosts are sailing high on confidence and are in terrific form. Sri Lanka will play for pride but with their morale low, it will be hard to favour a win for them here.

Second ODI Preview: West Indies in complete control

With the exception of winning the toss, everything went the way of West Indies in the first one-day international. Sri Lanka came to bat and started well with an opening partnership of 105 runs.

Gunathilaka and Karunaratne scored a half-century each before succumbing to the opposing bowlers. The middle order, however, went for a complete toss and couldn’t keep up the good work by their openers.

Case in point, the score was 105-1 in the 20th over. By the 31st over, the same was 151-5. Ashlen Bandara put up some fight with his 50 off 60 balls but that wasn’t enough. Ultimately, the Sri Lankan team was bowled out for 232 runs by the 49th over.

When West Indies came on to bat, they looked in absolute control right from the get-go.

Their opening batsmen – Lewis and Hope – put up 175 runs on the board.  Hope scored a brilliant century of 110 runs off 133 balls while Lewis’s half-century added to the title chase.

Dushmantha Chameera managed to get both the openers out but the damage was done by then. Darren Bravo came on third to bat and assisted in sealing the win with his 37 off 47 deliveries.

West Indies will head into the second ODI on the back of this remarkable batting and bowling prowess. They have everything going right for them and shouldn’t have any difficulties in getting the win and the series.

First ODI Preview: West Indies looking to exorcise past demons

The Indies are playing in their first ODI series since losing 3-0 to Bangladesh earlier this year. They will also be eyeing revenge after losing to Sri Lanka 3-0 in a clean sweep of the ODI series in early 2020.

It is worth mentioning that while the West Indies are fairly good in the 20-20 game, they are equally bad in the ODIs.

If we are to look at their ODI performance over the last few years, the only teams that they have managed to beat in a bilateral series are the lowly-ranked, newcomers like Afghanistan and Ireland.

They have also faced the likes of India, Bangladesh, and New Zealand but haven’t had a lot of success there apart from a win or two.

This time around, they are playing at home and will be looking to build on their recent victory against the Lions.

That said, their record at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium as they have won just three of their last nine games here. However, their last match was over three years ago and a lot has changed since then.

Secondly, the West Indies are fielding a squad that is comparatively more experienced than Sri Lanka’s and has some big names who can turn the show around.

West Indies recent form

Their run in the 50-over format has been quite abysmal. It is a similar story in the other formats of the game too.

Keeping aside their last week’s T20 series win over the Lions, they had been beaten by Bangladesh in One-Day Internationals, New Zealand in T20I and Test series, and England in a three-match test series.

All of this took place over the course of the last year or so.

Their recent defeat in Bangladesh was quite a disheartening one as the Indies lost their three matches by huge margins. They lost the first ODI by 6 wickets after putting just 122 runs on the board.

In the second ODI, they did better themselves but only to set a meagre target of 149 runs. The Bengal Tigers won that game by 7 wickets.

In the final ODI, Bangladesh batted first and put up 297 runs. In response, West Indies reached a mere 177 runs before being bowled out.

Sri Lanka recent form

At least in the ODI series, Sri Lanka have fared comparatively better than their Caribbean counterparts.

Their last bilateral series was against the Indies themselves that they won 3-0 last year. The Lions had a similar run against Bangladesh too.

Between these two series, they did travel to Pakistan to play the side in a three-match ODI tour. They ended up losing the series 0-2.

As for their overall performance, Sri Lanka are more or less in the same boat as the West Indies.

Before travelling to the Caribbean, the Lions played England and South Africa in a couple of bilateral test series. Sri Lanka lost them both by 2-0.

Dimuth Karunaratne (C), Dasun Shanaka, Danushka Gunathilake, Pathum Nissanka, Ashen Bandara, Oshada Fernando, Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Mathews, Niroshan Dickwella, Thisara Perera, Kamindu Mendis, Wanindu Hasaranga, Ramesh Mendis, Nuwan Pradeep, Asitha Fernando, Dushmantha Chameera, Akila Dananajaya, Lakshan Sandakan, Dilshan Madushanka, Suranga Lakmal.

West Indies vs Sri Lanka ODI Series analysis

West Indies and Sri Lanka have played each other thrice in a 50-over series since 2015. Sri Lanka have been victorious in all of them, including the series from January last year at home.

Sri Lanka won the series 3-0 after a brilliant performance throughout. They won the first one-day by 6 runs after putting up 307 runs on the board.

The second one was won by an astounding 161 runs, courtesy of a big target of 346 runs and some brilliant bowling by Sandakan and Silva.

As for the last one, it came down to the wire as Sri Lanka won by 1 wicket with 5 balls to spare.

An evenly-matched series

Sri Lanka and West Indies are both looking to shake off their recent jitters in this format of the game. On one hand, West Indies are looking to outperform themselves and win big against the Lions.

On the other, Sri Lanka will be hoping to avoid a consecutive series loss in the Caribbean.

Both the teams have plenty of good players with West Indies fielding a fairly more experienced and talented squad. However, the determination is high with the Lankans to reinvent themselves on the cricket map.

Expect a good, scintillating series.
