Needless to mention, the next one week is going to feature the best of the best in European football, battling it out to reach the next stage. Several exciting fixtures are lined up where we are bound to see big upsets.

Case in point, can Cristian Ronaldo inspire Portugal to beat the No. 1 ranked team in the world? Can England tap into the home advantage and beat the former World Champions Germany to reach the quarters?

Will Spain survive the Croatian threat and find their former glory in the process?

Whatever may be the outcome, football fans are in store for a massive treat. With that in mind, mentioned below are three scenarios that we are likely to see in the UEFA Euro 2020 Knockouts.

Italy, Sweden to Breeze into the Quarters

Roberto Mancini has guided Italy to a perfect start in the Euros. Three wins in three group games, zero goals conceded – they have been absolutely flawless in every sense of the word. Moreover, the final group game against Wales saw the Azzurri rest their talismanic stars like Immobile, Insigne, and Chiellini ahead of this knockout fixture.

Facing a side like Austria (who qualified on the back of wins against lower-ranked teams like North Macedonia and Ukraine), Italy will more than fancy their chances of reaching the quarters.

And why shouldn’t they – they are unbeaten in 25+ games now and it is quite unlikely for the unexceptional Austrians to put an end to that remarkable campaign.

By the same token, Sweden are also likely to reach the next round. Having topped their table with two wins and a draw, they now face Ukraine who reached the Round of 16 after finishing third in their Group C.

With just one win and two losses for Zbirna, they made it this far after owing to a superior goal difference when compared to Finland and Slovakia. In other words, they were the fourth-best third-placed team to advance to the round of 16.

Sweden should not face a lot of difficulties in their attempts to dispatch the shaky Ukrainian side.

Watch Out for the Dark Horses

A few teams like the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Wales, and Denmark have had a pretty decent run in their respective group stages.

These sides have displayed a strong tendency to deliver impressive results (Denmark’s rout of Russia by 4-1 and Czech Republic’s handsome 1-1 draw against Croatia) and can very well turn up the heat in the knockouts.

On that note, the fixture between Denmark and Wales will be a close one – the Dragons surprised everyone by reaching the semifinal in the last Euros (upsetting Belgium on the way). On the other hand, the Danes are playing this one for glory (and for Christian Eriksen, of course). Both teams have plenty of talent in their ranks to get the job done here.

As for the Dutch-v-Czechs, the Netherlands will start as the favourites (three for three in the group stage but two of those wins came against North Macedonia and Ukraine). However, Patrik Schick has inspired the Czech Republic to reach the playoffs and having made it so far, his side will look to topple the Flying Dutchmen.

Similarly, the bout between France and Switzerland should also prove to be an entertaining one.

The reigning World Champions had a rocky run in the group stage with draws against Hungary and Portugal.

The Swiss can seek some inspiration (and tactical knowledge) from these results and try to leverage it into a huge upset for the French.

Upsets are Guaranteed

Between Belgium and Portugal, it is quite difficult to pick an outright winner. Yes, the Red Devils have been nothing short of sensational in the group stage but they face a Portugal team that is driven by the Ronaldo engine.

Defending champions Portugal managed to hold France to a heroic 2-2 draw as Ronaldo scored both those goals and equalled Ali Daei’s record of most goals scored in international matches (109). What’s more impressive is the 36-year-old is getting a lot of support from his fellow teammates to pick up these positive results.

We all know that when Ronaldo is in a form like this, it is next to impossible for the opposing team to stop him. Belgium will be cautious heading into this match and will look to outclass the dangerous Navegadores.

Then, there’s the game between England-Germany, one that will be played in London. England have a significant home advantage here and combined with Germany’s shaky campaign in the Euros (a draw, a win, and a defeat) and the matches preceding, the Three Lions can very well topple the four-time World Champions.

Lastly, between Croatia-Spain, the Croats look primed to come out as the winners. However, in Spain’s last group match against Slovakia, La Roja fired warning shots with a 5-0 whitewash.

Both teams finished second in the group stage and are coming in this game on the back of rather similar performances. They are evenly matched and it wouldn’t be surprising if this one goes to extra time.
