The countdown to the start of Euro 2020 is on and now is the time to look at who may actually be the Euro 2020 winner, plus the latest Euro 2020 winner odds.

I’m about to tell you what each team needs in order to go and win the Euros, which two teams tick the most boxes at good prices and what we don’t like about a few of the other big favourites.

Tough tournament to predict

Let’s be honest here. This is an extremely open tournament where there’s not too much to choose between the top six or seven sides.

To further complicate matters, there isn’t a host nation as such, though in this regard England arguably have an advantage by playing all their matches at home, plus the semi and final, should they make it that far.

To make it all even harder, there’s the fact that this tournament was of course postponed from last summer and with the whole season jam-packed into a shorter calendar than usual, there will be some pretty exhausted players.

Past Euro Cup Winners

The Euro 2020 odds themselves are a good way of getting our head around the genuine chances of the different candidates.

Here are the last few UEFA Euro winners:

  • Euro 2016- Portugal
  • Euro 2012- Spain
  • Euro 2008- Spain
  • Euro 2004- Greece
  • Euro 2000- France
  • Euro 1996- Germany

Even though Greece were massive outsiders to win Euro 2004 and Portugal available at around the 16.0 mark before their Euro 2016 success, this is a tournament generally won by favourites.

What does a team need to win Euro 2020?

The next step is to identify the necessary qualities for a team that could go all the way. In no particular order, here’s what’s required.

  • Strong starting XI.
  • Likely to get out of their group.
  • Capable and experienced manager.
  • Good recent showing in a big tournament.
  • Good depth to the squad with decent options on the bench.
  • Not missing too many players through injury or other reasons.
  • High UEFA ranking proving they’ve been consistent over the past few years.

The more boxes a team ticks, the better. But of course, we also have to be satisfied that they’re available at good odds.

Back Portugal for Euro 2020 Winners

Best Odds: 10.0 with Betway

So step forward Portugal. The first of our Euro 2020 winner predictions.

They’re the defending champions in this tournament, though they were admittedly a little disappointing at the last World Cup. However, they’ve since also won the inaugural League of Nations, proof that they can handle the big occasions and can keep cool under pressure.

They’re currently ranked sixth in the UEFA rankings.

Portugal’s Team

As for the team, there are no notable absences through injury and if anything, they’re a considerably stronger squad than when they won it in 2016. That time it was pretty much Cristiano Ronaldo trying to do the lot and the others supporting him but it’s a very different story this time round.

In attacking positions alone, Portugal have the following players available who weren’t around five years ago: Joao Felix, Diogo Jota and of course, Bruno Fernandes.

In defence they now have the man who was just voted the Premier League Writer’s Player of the Year in Ruben Dias, while some of the old heads like Ronaldo, Pepe, Rui Patricio and Joao Moutinho are still around.

And in Fernando Santos they have one of the most experienced coaches around. It’s worth remembering he was the man in charge when they won in 2016.

Portugal’s Group

All fo this means the only real problem is their group. Pitted against France and Germany (plus Hungary), they’re in arguably the strongest group of the lot.

But they’re perfectly capable of beating Hungary and securing a minimum of a draw against either France or Germany. That could well be enough to finish as one of the best third-placed teams but it’s certainly not impossible that they win it or finish second.

At Euro 2020 winner odds of 10 with Betway, they represent an extremely good bet.

Back England for Euro 2020 Winners

Best Odds: 6.0 with Betway

In a tournament like this, there’s nothing wrong with having two bets on the winner’s market and the second one is England.

They’ll have been massively disappointed by losing to Croatia at the 2018 World Cup in what was by far their best shot at winning a tournament since the 1966 World Cup.

But they’ve been very impressive since, which of course is why they’re ranked Number 2 on UEFA’s charts, behind only Spain.

Manager Gareth Southgate has now been in the job for a while and is good both tactically, and in terms of man management.

A few eyebrows were raised when Southgate released his squad list, which contained a load of defenders and arguably not enough midfielders. But it’s a good bunch of players nonetheless.

In Harry Kane they have the 6.5 favourite to win the Golden Boot for Top Goalscorer, while Declan Rice and Phil Foden are among the leading candidates for the Young Player of the Tournament Award.

In attack the likes of Jack Grealish and Jadon Sancho are coming off fine seasons, as is Mason Mount and Jordan Henderson in midfield and the likes of Harry Maguire and Kyle Walker in defence.

Unlike Portugal, they have the advantage of being in a pretty easy group with the Czech Republic, Croatia and Scotland for company.

Analysis of the favourites

Finally, let’s quickly go through why we avoided a few other big favourites.

Belgium flag

Belgium

Belgium missed their chance at Euro 2016 when they had their best squad in years and may now be without their best player in Kevin de Bruyne, who suffered an injury in the Champions League final. They also don’t look quite as solid in defence as they have been in the past.

Spanish flag

Spain

Spain will be very good from a technical point of view, as ever, but it’s now been two or three tournaments where they’ve struggled to make an impact. This could be the one where they get back to their best but theme again, it may not. They look a tiny bit light in attack, as well.

Germany flag

Germany

And you could say the same about Germany. Traditionally of course they’ve been one of the toughest teams to beat but maybe Jogi Low has now been in the job a little too long and run out of ideas.

France

France

As for France, they are after all the world champions and should probably have won Euro 2016 as well after going into the final as such strong favourites. They tick just about every box themselves and are the same price as England, but we just about prefer England.
