Playing Field and Player Analysis

Top Half

Leading the field is World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty, who is making her first appearance on the tour since the Australian Open. The 23-year-old has been in a good run this season – she won the title in Adelaide and followed it with a semifinal run in Melbourne. Even though she is a highly formidable player, she has been pitted in the same bracket as Garbine Muguruza and Sofia Kenin – the two finalists from this year’s Australian Open.

Garbine Mugurza and Sofia Kenin may meet in the Qatar Open 2020

Muguruza returned to form this season by reaching the final in Melbourne, defeating Elina Svitolina, Simona Halep, and Kiki Bertens along the way. Sofia Kenin, meanwhile, won her first-ever major title and is now a World No. 5 as a result. In fact, the two big guns may meet as early as the third round, giving us a rematch of the Australian Open final.

In addition to Barty and Muguruza, we will also see the likes of Karolina Pliskova and Petra Kvitova in action in Doha. These two Czech superstars are in the same bracket, with a prospective meeting in the quarterfinal. Kvitova hasn’t had the best of the start to the season with a few wobbly results in St. Petersburg, Melbourne, and Adelaide before that. Pliskova, on the other hand, won the Brisbane International earlier this year. Since then, however, her form has taken a toll as she struggles to move past the early rounds.

In this intriguing dynamic, we will also see Ons Jabeur, Jennifer Brady, and Elena Rybakina trying to spice things up. Rybakina, having already played in four finals this season, is the dark horse in Doha.

Bottom Half

The bottom half features the likes of Kiki Bertens and Aryna Sabalenka. Bertens most recently defended her title in the St. Petersburg Open but hasn’t been that active throughout the tour. She pulled out of the events in Dubai and Adelaide and is now playing in her Middle East event of the season. Meanwhile, Sabalenka has been struggling a great deal with her form this season as she looks to deliver a remarkable run on the tour.

belinda bencic looking happy

Swiss No. 1 Belinda Bencic is also in contention for the title. The 22-year-old Bencic is in the same boat as Sabalenka. Backed by a series of disappointing results and early exits, she is eying a quick turnaround in form. However, she has her work cut out with the defending champion Elise Mertens placed in the same bracket as her. Things get more interesting when we see the American teen prodigy Amanda Anisimova also competing in the tournament. She has already knocked out Elina Svitolina from the Qatar Open 2020, leaving the field wide open.
