Ireland vs South Africa Betting Odds

The best cricket betting tips ahead of the match are coming right up.

Ireland are on the verge of making history by winning their first ODI series against the mighty Proteas.

Should they pull this off, it will be the first time that they win a series against a team that is ranked much higher in the ICC Rankings. Their chances are looking quite good, seeing the stellar performance by the hosts in the second 50-over match.

That said, South Africa will start as the favourites, at least odds-on. However, I’m going to back the underdogs here because who doesn’t love a good underdog story?

Irish flag for the t20 against South Africa

Ireland Team News

Ireland defeated South Africa by 43 runs in the second ODI in what was their only fourth instance where they have beaten a ‘big’ team. Having lost the toss and made to bat first, the hosts managed to reach 290-5 on the back of Andy Balbirnie’s 102 off 117 balls.

Harry Tector and George Dockrell also did well to assist their captain by scoring 79 and 45 respectively.

Needless to say, the Irish batsmen did a fabulous job of facing the seasoned South African bowlers. When the hosts came on to defend their total, they did so in style with each of the six bowlers getting a wicket under his belt.

Mark Adair, Josh Little, and Andy McBrine got two wickets each, thus restricting South Africa to 247 all out in 48.3 overs.

Ireland are looking to win their first one-day series since beating Zimbabwe at home in 2019. It is nothing short of mission impossible as South Africa are likely to field their strongest playing XI to salvage the series.

Ireland’s Likely XI

Stirling, Balbirine, Tector, Adair, Dockrell, Campher, Tucker, Singh, McBrine, Little, Young

South Africa Team News

South Africa may have underestimated their Irish opponents and quite frankly, so did I. Ireland have shown a lot of heart in the series, something that may be proving a bit too much to handle for the visitors.

Despite winning the T20I series against West Indies, they find themselves on the verge of hitting a new low by losing the series to Ireland.

In the second ODI, all but Tabraiz Shamsi finished their spells at an economy rate of more than 5.0. Plus, Anrich Nortje and Andile Phehlukwayo didn’t find much assistance from the pitch as they struggled to contain Irish batting.

Speaking of batting, Janneman Malan’s 84 off 96 and Rassie van der Dussen’s 49 added some fight to their chase of 290 runs. However, it wasn’t enough as the rest of the batting order, including Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram pretty much collapsed without contributing a lot.

Expect Quinton de Kock to start in the match ahead of Kyle Verreynne.

South Africa’s Likely XI

Malan, Markram, Bavuma, Van der Dussen, Miller, de Kock, Phehlukwayo, Rabada, Maharaj, Nortje, Shamsi

Venue & conditions

The match will be played at The Village Stadium in Malahide, Dublin.

Ireland have never won an ODI here since 2014 – back then, they won that game against Scotland by 3 wickets.

The weather in Dublin on Tuesday was thankfully pleasant enough to have the entire match go uninterrupted. Similar conditions are expected on Friday too with the overcast being mostly cloudy.

Ireland vs South Africa Head-to-Head

This upcoming meeting will be their eighth ODI meeting in history.

If you look at the cricketing world right now, upsets are being delivered all around. West Indies won the series against Australia – their first such feat since 1995 against the Aussies.

Similarly, England beat Pakistan 3-0 in the ODI series despite fielding a team on unseasoned, novice cricketers against a full-strength, experienced Pakistan squad.

There is no reason why Ireland cannot join this club and establish themselves on the international stage, especially given that the tide of momentum is on their side. Balbirnie has scored a century and a half-century already; the expectations will be high from the captain to lead the team in the final hurdle too.

Plus, they have the home advantage and a historic chance of winning this David vs Goliath battle – something that may prove to be a defining moment in Irish cricket.
