The final day of the league stage was certainly an exciting one in the Indian Super League as FC Goa reached the playoffs while Mumbai City FC won the League Winners Shield.
Another top-four finish for FC Goa
Juan Ferrando-led FC Goa has made it to the ISL playoffs by the skin of their teeth. Facing Hyderabad FC in a draw-or-die situation, the boys fought heroically to keep the Nizams at bay and restrict them to a 0-0 draw.
A win for Hyderabad here would have probably seen them through to the playoffs but Goa stuck to their guns and defended with all their might. The last 5 minutes of the match saw both the sides bag a red card each but Goa didn’t let the nerves get to them.
With 0 shots on target and some fine defending, they are through to the semifinals, set to start next week.
That goalless match was a first one for the Gaurs this season – prior to this, they have seen at least one goal in their every single match so far.
Mumbai finish at the top
The final league matchday also saw Mumbai City FC and ATK Mohun Bagan compete for the top-place finish and the League Winners Shield. Mumbai won the match 2-0 to be crowned as the league winners of the season.
The Islanders headed into this match trailing the Kolkata side by 3 points in second place. However, by the end of the 90th minute, Mumbai City FC had leapfrogged the Mariners to finish the ISL 2020-21 at the top place with 40 points.
That brilliant victory saw Moutarda Fall and Bartholomew Ogbeche score a goal each as Sergio Lobera’s side displayed a teaser of what to expect from them in the semifinals.
The also puts them in the next season of the AFC Champions League.
