Multan Sultans Recent Form

The reigning champions of PSL are just one game away from retaining their title. The Multan Sultans have been the outstanding team this year, winning 10/11 matches to get here.

Their only loss came in Lahore against the Qalandars. They fell well short of Lahore’s 182/4 and lost by 52 runs.

But they avenged that defeat earlier this week. Batting first, the Sultans made 163/2 and defended it easily. They won by 28 runs.

Team News

I look down the Sultans lineup and I don’t see too many weaknesses. I have mentioned the excellent opening partnership many times already! All I will say here is Mohammad Rizwan has now scored 50s in all of his last 4 innings.

There is one bit of team news to keep an eye on. Middle-order hitter Tim David missed the Sultans’ last match – possibly because of Covid. He might come back in here but, if not, Johnson Charles will probably get a chance to show what he can do.

With the ball, Imran Tahir and Khushdil Shah are the Sultans’ spin twins and they continue to look great. As you are about to see, the fast bowling unit is starting to look good too…

Player to Watch: Shahnawaz Dahani

Fast bowler Shahnawaz Dahani made his T20I debut for Pakistan late last year. That was after he made his name in the 2021 PSL.

In his first PSL tournament, he ended up as the leading wicket taker – with 20.

This year, he made a slower start in the group stages, but was excellent in Multan’s last game against the Qalandars.

He produced his best figures of 3/19 and now has 16 wickets for the tournament. Another good game here and he could still match that figure of 20.

Multan Sultans’s Likely XI

Shan Masood, Mohammad Rizwan, Aamer Azmat, Rilee Rossouw, Johnson Charles, Khushdil Shah, David Willey, Asif Afridi, Rumman Raees, Imran Tahir, Shahnawaz Dahani

Lahore Qalandars Recent Form

I really like Lahore’s attitude. They were in some difficult situations against Islamabad United, but Shaheen Shah Afridi’s men never gave up.

South African all-rounder David Wiese really stepped up for them. First he blasted 28* from eight balls to lift the Qalandars to a competitive total (168/7). Then, with United needing just 8 from 6 balls, he bowled a brilliant final over to win the match by six runs.

Wiese is part of one of the PSL’s best bowling units. Since the tournament moved to Lahore, the Qalandars have played 7 times and have not conceded more than 163 in an innings.

Team News

When I look down the Qalandars lineup, I do see a couple of holes.

Fakhar Zaman has been brilliant at the top of the order. He’s passed 50 8 times in 12 innings. Only Rizwan can realistically stop him becoming PSL 2022’s top run-scorer.

But who should Fakhar’s opening partner be? It’s been Phil Salt recently, but the Englishman is averaging 9 from 8 innings.

Down the order, the great Afghan spinner Rashid Khan is unavailable for this match. The bowling unit will miss him, but there is some better news for Lahore. Pakistani pace man Haris Rauf looked good against Islamabad on Friday.

Player to Watch: Shaheen Shah Afridi

Shaheen Shah Afridi is a remarkable young fast bowler. Last year, he helped Pakistan beat India by 10 wickets in the T20 World Cup. He also became the youngest player ever to win the ICC’s Men’s Cricketer of the Year award.

Still only 21, he is in his first season as captain of the Qalandars. He seems to be enjoying the responsibility – if he can grab a couple of wickets in this game, he’ll be the tournament’s leading wicket taker.

His team might also need him with the bat. Against Peshawar Zalmi recently, he smashed 23 from a single over. Perhaps one day he won’t be a great fast bowler – he will be a great all-rounder.

Lahore Qalandars’s Likely XI

Fakhar Zaman, Phil Salt, Abdullah Shafique, Kamran Ghulam, Mohammad Hafeez, Harry Brook, Samit Patel, David Wiese, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, Zaman Khan

Venue & conditions

This is the 19th game of PSL 2022 in Lahore. The team batting first has won an impressive 13/18 – in one of those matches they needed a super over.

The average first-innings score from those games is around 176.

The weather is expected to be dry for this night match.

Multan Sultans vs Lahore Qalandars Head-to-Head

These two have played each other 12 times before. The Multan vs Lahore head-to-head record is: 5 wins for the Qalandars; 7 wins for the Sultans.

The pair have played four times before in Lahore – each team has won twice.

This year, the Sultans won the first meeting in Karachi. The Qalandars won the second one in Lahore. Then the Sultans won the recent eliminator.

Multan Sultans vs Lahore Qalandars Toss Prediction

Teams batting first seem to have an advantage in Lahore, so the toss could be crucial in this match. The Lahore vs Multan toss winner statistics show the Sultans coming out on top here too.

Multan have won 7/12 previous tosses between these two – including 2/3 this year. I am backing the Sultans to be the toss winner again in this match.

TEAMS TOSS WIN %
Lahore Qalandars 5 41.67%
Multan Sultans 7 58.33%

Recommended Bet: Back Multan Sultans @ 1.68 with Pure Win

These are the two best teams in PSL 2022 – hopefully they give this great tournament the final it deserves!

Who’s going to win? Well, both sides have brilliant individuals who could win the game single-handedly. Lahore also have that never-say-die attitude.

But Multan have won 2/3 against the Qalandars already. And they have the stronger overall team unit.

Last time these two played, I thought the win probability Multan vs Lahore favoured the Sultans. I believe the same thing today. My betting prediction is for the Sultans to win this game and retain their PSL crown.
