Bangladesh Recent Form

It certainly helps when one of your players is in the form of his life. Bangladesh won the recent T20I Series 2-1 with Litton Das making a superb contribution of 136 in the Second ODI and following that up with another good knock of 86 in the Third, though they ultimately lost that match anyway.

And Das brought his T20I form to the ODI arena on Thursday, with his 60 off just 44 balls the stand-out knock in the match and an innings that saw him receive yet another man-of-the-match award.

Somewhat worryingly for Bangladesh, no-one else really got going but then again, they didn’t really need to when Das was batting like that.

155 was quite a few runs above a par score but not impossible, so credit must also go to their bowlers.

Shakib was his usual reliable self with 2-18 but the real star with the ball was Nasun Ahmed, who like Shakib is a left arm spinner.

He took 4-10 and probably should have been man-of-the-match himself.

Bangladesh Team News

Mushfiqur Rahim was surprisingly left out of the team for that first match. You’d think that at his age and with his experience they’d either have him in the squad and play him, or not have him there at all.

He doesn’t seem to want to keep wicket that much these days and with the form Das is showing with the bat, that’s currently not a problem.

Das has been good with the gloves and excellent with the bat so in that regard Rahim hasn’t been missed that much.

Then again, surely Rahim deserves a place in the side just as a batsman.

If they see it that way, maybe one of the two openers will make way, Das will open and Rahim will come into the middle order.

Shoriful Islam was expensive and though he took three late wickets, his place may be under threat.

Player to Watch: Mahmudullah

Few players in limited-overs cricket can boast the same levels of experience as Mahmudullah, the skipper.

Quite a few players may have 200-plus ODI appearances under their belts but not many also have over 100 (114 to be precise) appearances in T20Is, as well. He does.

A proper all-rounder, he’s spent the last few years perfecting the art of being the team’s finisher while also bowling some off-spin when the conditions are right for him.

He wasn’t needed much in the first match with Das batting so well and just the five bowlers needed to keep Afghanistan at bay in reply.

But he’s just the man to rebuild an innings or get his team over the line in a tough chase and may have a far bigger impact this time round.

Betway make it 6.0 that he top scores for his side.

Bangladesh’s Likely XI

Litton Das, Munim Shahriar, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah, Yasir Ali, Afif Hossain, Mahedi Hasan, Shoriful islam, Nasum Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman.

Afghanistan Recent Form

The first match was a reminder of why Afghanistan maybe haven’t kicked on as they would have liked in this format.

They did plenty of hard work in restricting Bangladesh to what was above a par score but by no means an impossible target.

Rashid Khan was understandably excellent (1-15) and Fazalhaq Farooqi also good with 2-27, though Qais Ahmed and Mohammad Nabi were expensive, which is why they ended up using seven bowlers.

But 156 was reachable and as so often happens, it was their batting letting them down.

They can hit the ball long and far on good wickets but when it comes to knuckling down and scoring ‘tough runs’ they can’t normally be relied upon.

They’ll need to work on this because you never know what sort of wicket you’re going to get on any given day.

Team News

Qais Ahmed was very expensive in that last match, so his place in the side may be up for grabs.

One option is to play all-rounder Sharafuddin Ashraf instead and try to get more overs out of the other all-rounders.

But having dropped two or three senior players for this Series, they don’t really have much else they can do in terms of changing things up.

Player to Watch: Mohammd Nabi

Maybe the solution to their batting problems is for the uber-experienced skipper Mohammad Nabi to bat at four and anchor the innings, rather than coming in at six.

He’s the team’s most experienced player by some distance, having played in the IPL, Big Bash and a few other T20 franchise leagues around the world.

He’s also had a 13-year international career that has seen him play 87 T20Is and a total of 328 T20s at domestic level.

For good measure, no-one has won more man-of-the-match awards in T20Is than his 13 in 87 games.

So there really might be something in letting him play a more patient game in that middle-order, while others take more risks.

He’s a big-looking 11.0 with Betway to top score and quite frankly, he may not have much to beat.

Here’s our Betway review where we tell you why we advise this betting site to all indian customers.

Afghanistan’s Likely XI

Hazratullah Zazai, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Najibullah Zadran, Mohammad Nabi, Azmatullah Omarzai, Darwish Rasooli, Karim Janat, Ashraf, Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Fazalhaq Farooqi.

Venue & conditions

Bangladesh like it at Maipur.

Between March 2020 and September 2021 they won eight out of nine here, only losing to Australia the once. Although it was also here that they lost 3-0 to an excellent Pakistan in November last year.

What was interesting in the first match was that Bangladesh’s total was quite a bit above the par score. It was the first time in seven games in Maipur that even 135 was breached, let alone 155.

We put that mostly down to the excellent knock of Das.

Assuming he doesn’t play like that again, nor does anyone else for the Tigers, it might be worth betting Bangladesh fail to get to 140. If it’s Afghanistan batting first, it might be worth going under 130.

Bangladesh vs Afghanistan Head-to-Head

The Bangladesh v Afghanistan head to head shows these two have played each other just seven times. That’s perhaps not that surprising: it’s very rare they play each other in a bilateral Series.

What’s also somewhat surprising is that Afghanistan are 4-3 up. The Tigers won the first-ever match between the two back in 2014 but Afghanistan won the next four. But Bangladesh hit back on Thursday and look the bet to level things up at 4-4.

Bangladesh vs Afghanistan Toss Prediction

The Bangladesh vs Afghanistan toss winner statistics show the Tigers are 5-2 up, after winning the toss and choosing to bat on Thursday. We think Mahmudullah might just win it again.

Recommended Bet: Back Bangladesh to win @ 1.54 with Pure Win

Time to predict the match-winner. I’ve discussed that Bangladesh have an excellent record here at Maipur with the only blemish being that 3-0 loss to Pakistan late last year, who are after all one of the top sides in the world.

They obviously know how many is enough batting first and how to go about chasing when that’s the case. And having been slightly behind on the head-to-head record, they’re now just 4-3 down.

In terms of bowling, Afghanistan can match Bangladesh, especially if the wicket is taking spin. But in Das, Shakib, Mahmudullah and Rahim (if he plays), Bangladesh have four highly experienced and capable batsmen who Afghanistan would love to have.

And that may just be where the game is won and lost. The hosts can set 140 to win the game or chase that, whereas the tourists would ideally want to restrict the Tigers to 130 and try to chase that.

We normally look for reasons to side with the outsiders but Bangladesh are favourites for a very good reason here.
