Champions League Quarter-Final: Atletico Madrid v RB Leipzig Betting Tips

Atletico face Leipzig in the quarter-finals of the Champions League on Thursday, August 13, kick-off 8 pm Portuguese time (12:30 am IST).

We say Portuguese time because all Champions League matches will, of course, be played in Lisbon until the end of this year’s edition, this one taking place at the Estadio Jose Alvalade, home of Sporting Lisbon.

Plenty think this should be something of a walk in the park for the vastly-experienced Atletico against a side who have never been anywhere near this far in the competition in the past.

We’re about to tell you whether we think that might be the case and also give you the latest team news, in Atletico’s case that involves being without two players who tested positive for the Coronavirus.

All the stats, analysis and best Champions League betting tips ahead of the game will also be with you shortly.

Atletico Madrid vs RB Leipzig betting tips and predictions

Let’s have a look at what our top Atletico Madrid vs RB Leipzig bets are!

These have both been handpicked from a list of the best betting sites in India to bring you the best odds available.

We’re not going to focus on the winner market here, that’s too easy! Let’s have a look at some markets where you can actually make some money.

Bet Odds Why is this a good bet? Site
Back Atletico Madrid to keep a clean sheet 2.75 This is one of the meanest defences in Europe, well-organised, disciplined and excellent at working as a unit. Their first priority in any match is to not concede and against a side who are in all seriousness, a couple of pegs below them and missing their now-departed star goalscorer Werner, they could well keep a clean sheet here at a good price. Bet365
A penalty awarded in the match 3.5 Anyone who has been watching the  Champions League or Europa League match over the past week can vouch for the number of somewhat ridiculous penalties being awarded thanks to VAR. All the better for us if there’s one here. In truth, the theory that there are more now because of VAR isn’t specific to this game, but at those odds, that’s not really the point. Bet365

Match facts

Let’s discuss some of the most important top-line stats and facts ahead of this big game.

  • These teams have never played each other in a competitive match, not surprising given that Lepizig have rarely been playing in Europe in the past.
  • 71% of Atletico’s games in La Liga games went under 2.5 goals this season.
  • Atletico finished the season brilliantly, unbeaten in their last 11 at home and unbeaten in their last eight away.
  • Alvaro Morata isn’t always a certain starter for Atletico but has been their go-to man in Europe, being their top scorer in the Champions League with four.
  • Leipzig managed to keep clean sheets both home and away against Tottenham in the previous round, winning 1-0 at home and 3-0 away.

Atletico Madrid’s recent form

Diego Simeone’s men caused one of the shocks of the tournament when they knocked out Liverpool in the previous round.

They were good value for that win and although they were a little below par on the domestic front this season, finishing way off Real and Barca for a change, some feel they have been preparing for this competition and made it a priority which may go some way to explaining why they didn’t go all guns blazing in La Liga.

Still, they finished the season extremely well.

It hasn’t all been good, though.

Two of their players tested positive for Corona- Angel Correa and Sime Vrsalijko- and not only will they not play, but they also didn’t even travel, self-isolating at home as we speak.

The second isn’t a big issue as he doesn’t play that often anyway but Angel Correa is a significant loss.

He played in 33 games this season, scoring five goals, and has the added advantage of being able to operate as a winger or central forward.

Still, few would argue that Atletico’s starting XI isn’t vastly superior to that of Leipzig’s even without Correa.

Teenager Joao Felix is due a big performance in a big game and this could be the one where he justifies his huge transfer fee paid out last summer.

A rather tense-looking Joao Felix. He’s due a big performance in the Atletico Madrid v RB Leipzig Champions League quarter-final

RB Leipzig’s recent form

How do you replace the irreplaceable?

That’s the question RB’s fans will be asking themselves in the build-up to this watch now that they’ll have to make do without Timo Werner.

The Germany international scored 28 goals in 34 matches in the Bundesliga this season, to go with a further eight in the Champions League, including qualifying rounds.

All well and good but he was sold to Chelsa who quite rightly, didn’t let him play a further part in RB’s European campaign.

So they’ll have to find a new solution in terms of a proven goalscorer but without being able to bring in anyone new.

Easier said than done.

Ibrahima Konate is out injured and Marcel Sabizer is an injury doubt as well so that doesn’t help matters, either.

They’re likely to play a 3-5-2 formation, something Atletico don’t often have to face, so that could be a trump card they’re holding there.

Timo Werner will not be playing in the Champions League quarter-final match between Atletico Madrid and RB Leipzig

They were pretty average since the resumption, surprisingly good away and surprisingly poor at home.

They really have their work cut out here.
