Gujarat Titans vs Delhi Capitals Betting Odds

For my cricket betting tips on this game, I’m going with Gujarat to win it. They have one of the best bowling line-ups in the tournament and were good value for their win in their first game. At the current odds, they’re certainly worth going with.

I’ll also have my usual toss winner pick and the Hot Bet: a third tip at bigger odds than usual so that if we nail a couple of those now and then, we’ll show a good profit.

Gujarat Titans vs Delhi Capitals Winner Prediction

Recommended Bet: Back Gujarat Titans to win @ 2.26 with Parimatch

It’s always hard trying to predict how the new franchises might perform given how little we’ve seen of them. Mind you, you could say the same thing about just about every team this year, given the widespread changes after the mega auction.

Delhi are favourites here, which is unsurprising.

They’ve been good in the IPL for the past three years, showed real resilience in that chase, beat the tournament favourites and will surely feel better about life now that they can play their full quota of overseas players. Their bowling will certainly be stronger with Ngidi and Rahman in the side now.

But we have two good reasons to go with the outsiders Gujarat here.

The first is that their own bowling looks really strong. We’ve mentioned Khan, Shami and Ferguson already but Varun Aaron was good in that first match, too.

The second reason is that with chasing very much the way forward, getting to bat second will automatically give them an edge, if they do win the toss.

When the toss is so important it’s always worth taking a gamble on the outsiders and that’s the case here.

It’s tight but Gujarat are our match winner pick.

Why not check out our Parimatch review, where we explain why we’re so fond of this Indian-focused betting site.

Hot Bet

Recommended Bet: Back Varun Aaron to be Gujarat Top Bowler @ 6.14 with 10CRIC

Khan, Ferguson and Shami are all at similar sorts of prices to be Gujarat top bowler and that’s fair enough.

They were the big money signings who are right up there with the best T20 bowlers in the world.

Between them they will surely take bundles of wickets this season and all three are right up there among the most important players in the side.

But at a far, far bigger price you can take a gamble on Aaron. He’s slightly the forgotten man of Indian cricket, having played just 14 matches in the IPL over the past three years.

But he’s always been extremely quick and that’s a threat in any game of cricket. With all eyes on that trio for top wicket-taker, it may just be Aaron out bowling them at really big odds after a fine performance in the opening match.

Gujarat Titans Recent Form

Gujarat Titans made the best possible start to life as an IPL franchise with a good win over fellow newbies Lucknow.

They reduced the Super Giants to a below par score thanks to some excellent bowling.

Their bowling always looked strong on paper with Mohammed Shami, Rashid Khan and Lockie Ferguson in the side and so it proved, with Shami the pick of them with three early wickets which gave him the man-of-the-match award.

That included dismissing dangerman KL Rahul for a golden duck.

In reply they made things a little more difficult for themselves than they needed to be, losing one too many wickets in the middle order and in the end it was a super cameo from Rahul Tewatia that got them over the line, Tewatia smashing 40 off 24 to win the game with two balls to spare.

It was good to see Hardik Pandya bowling again. He hasn’t bowled in ages and though his four overs were expensive and he went wicketless, he’ll surely get better as the tournament progresses.

So the best possible start for them and they’ll be high on confidence.

Team News

They can make their bowling even stronger if they wish by picking Alzarri Joseph, who is available after being on Test duty for the West Indies.

They could bring him in for David Miller if they wished, though they may be a little cautious about having a slightly weak middle order and putting too much pressure on Tewatia.

So they’ll probably just go with the same team again.

Player to Watch: Mathew Wade

There was some doubt about where they were going to bat Wade but Jason Roy’s withdrawal forced their hand and they played him as an opening batsman, which is probably his best position to bat and where he scored most of his runs for Hobart in the Big Bash.

He hasn’t played much at all in the IIPL over the years despite a strong record in T20 cricket and frequent appearances for Australia so would have been glad to have had a decent game first up. Not that 30 off 29 was a fantastic knock but it did at least give them a solid start.

He’s certainly not one to die wondering and he’ll surely get that strike up rate sooner or later. It’s 4.79 with 10CRIC that Wade top scores for them.

Here’s our 10CRIC review by the way, where we look at all the aspects of the site that make it a favourite with Indian players.

Gujarat’s Likely XI

Matthew Wade, Shubman Gill, Vijay Shankar, Abhinav Manohar, Hardik Pandya, David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Lockie Ferguson, Mohammed Shami, Varun Aaron.

Delhi Capitals’ Recent Form

Delhi Capitals also started with a win and it was against pre-tournament favourites Mumbai, no less.

Chasing a steep total, they looked dead and buried at one stage before Lalit Yadav and in particular Axar Patel put their foot on the accelerator to get home with more than an over to spare, which really didn’t look likely at one stage.

It shows you the value of having players down the order who can smash it, which will surely be a theme in this tournament.

Earlier Kuldeep Yadav took three wickets for just 18 runs, earning him the man of the match award. But it could easily have gone to Patel, whose cameo was vital, though he didn’t bowl particularly well.

Team News

Aussie pair David Warner and Mitch Marsh are still unavailable though in Marsh’s case, he may only be available towards the end of the tournament, if at all. He has a hip injury and is running the risk of missing the IPL for the third year in a row after being injured two years ago and opting out last year.

But Lungi Ngidi and Mustafizur Rahman are available after finishing test duties for South Africa and Bangladesh respectively.

They only fielded two overseas players in their first game (Tim Seifert and Rovman Powell) so they can bring both if they wish, with Khaleel Ahmed and Kamlesh Nagarkoti the ones likely to make way.

South African pace ace Anrich Nortje is still recovering from a long-term injury.

Player to Watch: Shardul Thakur

It wasn’t just Axar Patel playing a big cameo lower down the order. Thakur’s 22 off 11 was just the sort of impetus that Delhi needed in the chase although he would have liked to hung around to finish the job.

However, like Patel he wasn’t so great in his main job as a bowler.

But what it does show you is the value of all-rounders. Being able to contribute with either bat or ball, in some cases both, really is a big advantage in any format and that’s certainly the case in the IPL.

It’s why all-rounders like Thakur go for so much money in the auction and why teams with the best ones tend to do well.

10CRIC make it 17.11 that Thakur top scores with the bat and 4.38 that he’s their top bowler.

Delhi’s Likely XI

Shaw, Seifert, Singh, Pant, Lalit Yadav, Powell, Thakur, Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Lungi Ngidi, Rahman.

Venue & conditions

We’ve only had one match at Pune so far and it was where Rajasthan posted 210/6 thanks to some excellent hitting from the likes of Sanju Samson and Jos Buttler.

In reply, SRH managed only 149 after a top order collapse that meant they were never in with a chance of chasing that.

So far it’s the only match won by the team batting first. But that was more down to the fact that the Royals batted particularly well and that Hyderabad started so badly rather than this being a bat-first wicket. So the team winning the toss will probably want to chase anyway.

What we did see in both innings was that it was easy to score quickly in the death overs so remember that when playing the first innings runs market or whether it’s betting on the match winner market in the second innings.
