Delhi Capitals IPL 2020 Preview & Betting Tips

The Delhi Capitals are one of the IPL’s great underachievers with not so much as a single IPL final to their name.

But after significant improvement last year and a better squad than they’ve had in years this time around, this could be their best chance yet of making a real splash.

Let’s find out what the best online betting sites think of their odds. We’ll also go through some stats too so you can make up your own mind.

Odds for Delhi Capitals to win the IPL

The best IPL odds have the Delhi Capitals at 7.0 to go and do what they’ve never done before and be crowned IPL champions. The price makes them the joint fourth favourites alongside Bangalore and behind Hyderabad, Mumbai and Chennai.

In truth, the odds look about right. There’s lots to like about their young, exciting, fearless players, particularly in the batting department, and they have as good a set of overseas players as anyone.

But what they don’t have is the experience of winning tight matches at the business end of the tournament and that has to be a concern.

DC best odds are with 10CRIC, Bet365 and Betway.

Delhi Capitals strengths & weaknesses

Delhi are very strong in some areas but vulnerable in others. So where do they hold the trumps and where might they struggle?

Strengths

  • Best spin bowling resources in the tournament.
  • Powerful and classy batting top order.
  • Lots of high-quality overseas players to pick from.

Weaknesses

  • Not well-stocked in the pace bowling department.
  • Lack of experience of being in the Play-Offs.

Has Delhi Capitals won the IPL before?

They haven’t even come close.

They’ve never even made a final with two semi-final defeats and a Qualifier 2 loss last year. In 12 seasons of IPL cricket this is the best they can show for their efforts.

They actually started off decently, making the semis in the first two editions of the IPL.

DC suffers defeat at last year's IPL against KXIP

That was a strong-looking squad back then featuring the hard-hitting Virender Sehwag, the prolific Gautam Gambhir, Dinesh Karthik and the inimitable AB de Villiers in their batting line-up. With the ball, Kiwi spinner Daniel Vettori and Ashish Nehra were their main men.

In 2008 they never had a chance in the semis after conceding 192 against the eventual winners the Rajasthan Royals and the following year, their 153 was never going to be enough against the Deccan Chargers, who also went on to win the league that season.

In 2012 they actually topped the group stages with star batters David Warner and Kevin Pietersen added to the roster.

They, unfortunately, lost both chances to make the final; by 18 runs to Kolkata and then by a massive 86 runs against MS Dhoni’s Chennai.

How did Delhi Capitals perform in IPL 2019?

Much better than previous years.

After six seasons of not making the Play-Offs including three years of finishing rock bottom, they put in a decent effort in the Group Stages to finish third.

Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer all had stellar seasons with the bat while South African duo Kasigo Rabada and Chris Morris, plus India internationals Ishant Sharma and Amit Mishra, were among those putting in impressive performances with the ball.

The big problem was that their best bowler of all – Rabada – got injured before the Play-Offs. They still managed to knock out Hyderabad in the Eliminator but in their second must-win game against Chennai in the Qualifier 2, their 147 was well below par and Chennai chased it pretty comfortably.

Delhi Capitals roster 2020

Batsmen Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Prithvi Shaw, Shreyas Iyer, Jason Roy, Rishabh Pant (wk), Alex Carey (wk), Shimron Hetmyer
All-rounders Axar Patel, Harshal Patel, Chris Woakes, Marcus Stoinis, Lalit Yadav
Spinners R Ashwin, Amit Mishra, Sandeep Lamichhane
Fast Bowlers Kagiso Rabada, Ishant Sharma, Keemo Paul, Avesh Khan, Mohit Sharma, Tushar Deshpande

Key players

Captain

Shreyas Iyer was an adventurous pick to take over the captaincy from Gautam Gambhir halfway through the 2018 season given he was just 23 at the time.

Delhi's captain Shreyas Iyer will take the lead again at this year's IPL

He didn’t manage to have an impact that season but the team improved markedly under him the next year.  He’s coming off the back of some good performances for India out in New Zealand. This included a brilliant century in an ODI in Hamilton.

A strong Delhi IPL 2020 season may well depend on his captaincy and form with the bat.

Gun player

A hard choice but we’re going to go with Rishabh Pant.

He’s the first-choice wicket-keeper batsman for India at the moment in limited-overs cricket. In addition to being solid with the gloves, he’s a typically explosive modern-day middle-order batsman.

He certainly thinks nothing of hitting the first ball he faces for six, if necessary. A strike rate of 156 in domestic T20 cricket tells you all you need to know about how dangerous he can be.

Promising youngster

Nepalese spinner Sandeep Lamichhane has already played so much T20 cricket around the world that it’s easy to forget that he’s still only 19. He had an impressive season for the Melbourne Stars over in the Big Bash and playing in multiple franchise leagues has just increased his experience of playing in so many different conditions. A proven wicket-taker with an economy rate under 7.

Team analysis

Our preview of the Delhi Capitals so far hasn’t really emphasised enough how strong their batting line-up is.  They could play Dhawan, Jason Roy, Iyer, Prithvi Shaw, Pant, Ajinkya Rahane and Alex Carey as a Top Seven and there might not be a better batting line-up in the tournament than that.

They also have no less than four top-notch spinners in Lamichhane, Axar Patel, Amit Mishra and India’s current test spinner Ravi Ashwin to call upon. The problem is their fast bowling stocks, where only Rabada (injured for the first of the week IPL anyway) and Mohit Sharma can really offer both control and wicket-taking threats.

The smart money is on them making the Play-Offs but falling short of going all the way.

The better Delhi Capitals betting prediction might be to go with uber-experienced run-machine Dhawan, who as an opener playing at a high-scoring ground, could score plenty.

Recommended bet: Back Shikhar Dhawan to be IPL top run-scorer @ 15.0 with 10CRIC.

Delhi Capitals FAQs

What odds are DC to win the IPL?

They’re 7.0 which suggests they’re about halfway down the list of IPL teams in the betting. That puts them at a bigger price than Chennai, Mumbai and Hyderabad, the same price as Bangalore and shorter than the Kings XI, the Rajasthan Royals and the  Kolkata Knight Riders to win the 2020 IPL.

Who is the betting favourite to be Delhi Top Batsman for IPL 2020?

Shikhar Dhawan is the favourite for Delhi top batsman honours for this year’s IPL. The 34-year old has played almost 250 times for India across the three formats and has featured in every season of the IPL so far. As a classy opening batsman, he has all the tools to have another big season in terms of runs scored.

What are the odds on DC finishing last in the Group Stages?

They’re 6.0 with 10CRIC. Finishing last is nothing new to Delhi, who have done so on four different occasions, the last of which was in 2018. But after a much more impressive campaign last season and good additions in key positions in this year’s auction, it’s pretty unlikely they’ll be bottom of the pile in 2020 in the Group Stages.

Who are Delhi Capitals’ overseas players?

Jason Roy, Shimron Hetmyer, Keemo Paul, Chris Woakes, Marcus Stoinis, Kagiso Rabada, Alex Carey and Sandeep Lamichhane are all overseas players for Delhi. The Delhi management will have a hard time picking just four of them with Rabada, Lamichhane, Roy and Woakes probably the favourites to play the most games from among the overseas stars.

Who is Delhi Capitals’ coach?

Former Australian skipper and brilliant batsman Ricky Ponting is the Head Coach of the Delhi Capitals. The management team also includes former India player Mohammad Kaif as an assistant coach, James Hopes as fast bowling coach and Samuel Badreee as spin bowling coach.
