Punjab Team News

Despite not making any of the changes we suggested they should ahead of their last game, Punjab won. Against RCB no less.

That was thanks to another brilliant effort with the bat from skipper KL Rahul. He made 91 not out (his second score of 91 this season) and got good support from Chris Gayle (who scored a brisk 46 off 24) and Harpreet Brar (25 off 17).

They posted 179/5 and that ended up being more than enough.  RCB started slowly and paid the price for that. But the big turning point was the spell bowled by Brar. His four overs went for just 19 runs and included the wickets of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers (he got a third). It doesn’t get much better than that.

However Nicholas Pooran had another stinker, this time a 3-ball duck. It’s his fourth in seven games and he has to make way for Dawid Malan. He’s had more than enough chances already.

Likely XI: Rahul, Singh, Gayle, Malan, Hooda, Shahruck Khan, Brar, Jordan, Bishnoi, Shami, Meredith.

Delhi Team News

Their strong season continues.

They’re currently second and looking good for a Playoff place. Their latest win was a straightforward run chase against KKR where Prithvi Shaw broke a T20 record.

Interestingly, they’re going well despite quiet contributions from their overseas players. Kagiso Rabada has been brilliant with the ball as per usual but that’s about it.

Marcus Stoinis has been expensive with the ball and inconsistent with the bat, Steve Smith has scored too slowly and hiron Hetmyer hasn’t really batted much at all.

But Delhi are unlikely to change the side as long as they keep winning.

Likely XI: Dhawan, Shaw, Smith, Pant, Stoinis, Hetmyer, Yadav, Patel, Rabada, Khan, Sharma.

Venue & conditions

The recent trend has been for teams to score between about 170 and 180 batting first here.

On occasions that’s been pretty easily chased, on others it’s proved far too many, as was the case with RCB against the Kings on Friday.

DC tend to prefer to chase whereas the Kings have two wins batting first and one chasing, so it’s hard to know what KL Rahul will prefer to do if he wins the toss.

PBKS vs DC Head-to-Head

Punjab are 15-12 up on the head to head.

They’ve also won four of the last six so have slightly had the upper hand over the past few seasons, too.

Last year it was one win each but it should have been two for Punjab. They tied a match that then went to a Super Over (which they lost) when they really should have won it comfortably.

Toss Winner

The DC may not have the upper hand when it comes to games won between the two but they’ve bossed the toss winner market. That includes winning three of the last four so they’re the selection.

Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals Winner Prediction

Recommended Bet: Back PK to win @ 2.15 with Casumo

There’s no doubt Delhi have started the season much better and that’s why they’re favourites.

But there were some serious signs of improvement in their last match for the Kings. Brar won’t always return bowling figures like that but he did bowl extremely well and gives the team an extra option with the bat and good energy. They also look much better with Riley Meredith back in the side. He bowled beautifully and very quick on occasion against RCB.

Of course, they can’t expect Rahul to bat out of his skin every match but he is very consistent.

Add in that head to head record favouring Punjab and the fact Delhi have out-of-form overseas players and you can see why this is a good chance to side with the outsiders.

PBKS Top Bowler: Riley Meredith

Recommended Bet: Riley Meredith Top PK  Bowler @  5.00 with 10CRIC

Harpreet Brar was brilliant on Friday but he did admittedly come on to bowl when the RCB batsmen knew they had to take lots of risks. He may yet repeat the trick and Mohammad Shami and Chris Jordan are threats too, but I’d rather go with Riley Meredith.

The Aussie paceman bowled rapid the other day and that’s going to have any batsman in trouble. He’s a death bowler of course so will have the chance to bowl at the end when opposition batters are taking more risks. That 5.0 is a big price for someone with that sort of raw pace.

Today’s PBKS v DC  Hot Bet

Recommended Bet: R Pant to be DC Top Batsman  @ 4.5 with 10CRIC

The two openers got all the plaudits last time because they got the bulk of the runs in an easy chase but don’t forget about Rishabh Pant.

He’s promoted himself to number three on quite a few occasions this season and that obviously increases his chances of getting more runs. But even from number four, he’s classy and aggressive enough to go on and get 50 from 30-odd balls.

Unless one of the openers hangs around for a long time, Pant could really take his chance and odds of 4.5 are decent enough.

Punjab v Delhi Fun Statistics

  • Chris Jordan has taken exactly 22 wickets in 22 IPL matches.
  • KL Rahul is the leading runscorer this IPL with 331 runs, including four fifties from just seven matches.
  • Deepak Hooda has hit almost as many sixes (37) as fours (39) in his IPL career.
  • Kagiso Rabada has an excellent return of 66 wickets in 41 matches in the IPL.
