Up next, our free cricket betting tips for today’s IPL match! This is one of those games where it’s not worth swaying away from the favourites. CSK have lost two in a row but this looks like the sort of game they can bounce back from, against a side that find it virtually impossible to chase anything.
It’s also worth going with the IPL’s top run scorer this year to be the game’s top batsman.
CSK have now lost two games in a row. And in slightly strange circumstances. At the weekend having started slowly, they had Ruturaj Gaikwad to thank for posting a very competitive score but then saw the Royals, of all teams, chase it pretty easily.
Then they lost to Delhi on Monday in somewhat different circumstances.
They crawled to just 136/5 thanks mostly to some late-order hitting from Ambati Rayudu and were very much in the game despite the low total.
But a costly missed catch off the set Shimron Hetmyer came back to haunt them and they went down.
Whereas those two defeats aren’t disastrous, they’re a bit of a wake-up call. Especially because on both occasions they failed to defend their total.
An excellent net run rate compared to RCB means that they just need to win this last match to be sure of a Top 2 finish.
But there are a few concerns. Sam Curran was having a poor tournament as it is but he’s now been ruled out of it entirely with injury and will also miss the T20 World Cup.
Even more worrying is the form of MS Dhoni with the bat.
In facing 27 balls against Delhi, he didn’t score a single boundary and got just 18 runs. Is this his last season in the IPL?
Assuming that the Punjab Kings don’t qualify for the Playoffs, they will look back at this season as one of huge missed opportunities.
Even before the break they’d made a mess of a couple of chases and having been guilty of arguably the biggest batting meltdown in the IPL ever against the Royals, they fluffed their lines against RCB at the weekend.
Not only was it a gettable target from the off but it was even easier when they were so well set after a good start from KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal once again.
But that’s been the story of their campaign. When those two are in they look unbeatable, when they get out no-one carries on their good work.
That goes for the likes of Chris Gayle, Deepak Hooda and Moises Henriques. Aiden Markram hasn’t made the most of his chances, either.
But the worst offender of all has been Nicholas Pooran.
Punjab showed plenty of faith in him after a poor start to the 2021 IPL season, mostly on the back of him showing some decent form in the CPL.
But it’s been poor from him since we moved to the UAE. They’ve moved him up and down the order between 3 and 5 but he just can’t get runs. He has just 85 in 11 knocks, which is awful, and that includes four ducks.
He’s extremely lucky to still be in the team but with Gayle leaving and this being (probably) the last game of the season for them, he should feature once more.
PBKS Likely XI
Rahul, Agarwal, Pooran, Markram, Sarfaraz Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Henriques, Brar, Bishnoi, Shami, Singh.
Venue & conditions
First innings scores seem to carry on being low in Dubai. CSK, a good batting side, mustered just 136. SRH managed just 115. What does seem to be the case though is that chasing is the way to go.
The problem with that is Punjab can’t be trusted to chase anything, while CSK will be hot favourites to do so.
Chennai Super Kings v Kings Punjab Head-to-Head
Chennai are 15-9 up. No surprises there. It’s a case of one of the most successful IPL franchises against one of the least successful ones. And CSK have had it all their own way of late. They’ve won the last four, including this season when chasing a low total with minimum fuss.
Deepak Chahar had a great game in that one. He took four wickets for just 13 runs, including bowling a maiden.
Chennai Super Kings v Kings Punjab Toss Prediction
This is one of the most one-sided contests when it comes to the toss in the IPL. And one that goes against the laws of probability. But then again, Dhoni has generally been lucky at the toss. Let’s go with CSK again.
Chennai Super Kings v Kings Punjab Winner Prediction
In normal circumstances, we could make a case for Punjab as big outsiders in Livebet, if they were chasing. That’s because it’s easier to chase here than bat first.
But we simply can’t show any faith in KL Rahul’s men after what we’ve seen in chases this season. They’ve made simple chases look hard and they’ve fallen short even in tough chases when they started brightly.
So why should it be any different this time round?
So CSK it is. Yes they may have lost a couple of games recently but they’ve been very consistent all season, are way up on the head to head and should get home one way or another.

Despite his team’s struggles, KL Rahul has more than done his bit. He’s been a decent captain, has kept wicket well and with the bat he’s been brilliant.
He’s often carried the team when it comes to batting. If you wanted to be really harsh, you could say he should have gone on and made 80s rather than 40s and 50s. But then again, it’s not his fault that he’s lacked support from everyone bar Agarwal.
The truth is he’s the top run scorer in the tournament. That’s on the back of five fifties, a high score of 91 and a strike rate of 129.
The other point to remember is that he knows he has to be there at the end so may not take so many risks. Others will score quicker but it would be no surprise if he’s good for 70 or 80 here.
Which should be more than enough.
