What can we look forward to?

Four Tests which will be played between December 17 and January 15 with Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane the venues.

The action starts at Adelaide in what will be the one and only day-night Test of the Series.

As ever, when they play that way, they’ll use a pink ball rather than the usual red one.

Aussie bowlers Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon have been deadly with the pink ball in the past so India could be under pressure early on.

Favourites to win Australia vs India Test Series

First up, a look at the prediction for cricket betting for the test series.

Australia are 1.4 to win the Series and that’s perfectly understandable.

They have an outstanding record in Test home series where their pace trio of Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins love bowling on fast, bouncy wickets that opposition batsmen struggle on so much.

With the bat the likes of Steve Smith and David Warner have often gone big with centuries and double centuries that knock the stuffing out of most tourist bowling attacks.

But India won the Series the last time they were here in 2018-19.

They won the first and third Tests and drew the fourth one to secure a priceless win Down Under.

It’s 5.5 with 10CRIC that India win the Series and 5.5 that it’s drawn.

Australia v India Test Series correct score prediction

It would take some doing for India to win the Series out in Australia again, after managing just that last time out.

It will be especially difficult given they’ll be without Virat Kohli for three of the four games.

But they should be good for at least one Test win and there tends to be a draw in there somewhere when the wickets are occasionally too good to produce a result; it normally happens once a Series when in Australia.

So backing the 2-1 Australia win at 5.5 with Betway looks the best bet.

Predictions for top batsman of the Test Series

The India top batsman for the Series market is an interesting one.

Virat Kohli (13.0 with Betway) can be ruled out straight away because he’s only playing one Test.

Chet Pujara is the favourite

The favourite is Chet Pujara (3.25) who bats at three, will always play and was the top scorer for the Series two years ago.

He’s certainly the favourite for a reason.

KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal are both 5.0 but Rahul may need to swerve because it’s not a given he’ll play every game.

Ajinkya Rahane is our hot favourite with incredible odds

The one we really like therefore is Ajinkya Rahane at 5.5.

As vice-captain, he’ll surely play all four Tests and has the strange quirk of having a better average overseas than in India.

A good player of the short ball and blessed with an excellent temperament, he could be the one to go with.

What of the Aussies?

For Australia, Steve Smith is the hot favourite at 2.2 and that’s no surprise

However, Marnus Labuschagne (4.0) can be a threat to Smith,

So can Matthew Wade (9.0) who might get a chance to open in the first couple of games.

Why is Virat Kohli only playing the First Test?

Kohli leaves Australia after the First Test to be back home for the birth of his first child.

Ajinkya Rahane will take over the captaincy in his absence and the smart money is on KL Rahul filling in for him at number four, though we’ll have to wait and see if Rahul gets a game before Kohli departs.

Like any other person arriving in Australia, Kohli would have to be quarantined for 14 days on his return from India so the management and Kohli have decided there’s no point in him returning for any Tests after the first one.

Virat Kohli won't be available for the Test series after the first game.

Australia in a mess

Australia coach Justin Langer must be feeling like he’s got the hardest job in cricket at the moment.

First he lost David Warner to injury during the T20 Series against India and then the man who was likely to fill in for him- Will Pucovski- suffered concussion in the Australia A game they were playing as preparation for the First Test and was ruled out, as well.

Opener Jamie Burns has been terribly out of form and Marcus Harris hasn’t played Test cricket for a year and a half so it’s anyone’s guess to who might open the batting in the First Test.

There were rumours veteran Shaun Marsh would be recalled or that middle-order batsmen Marnus Labuschagne or Matthew Wade could open, but we’ll have to wait and see.

In a separate incident, bowling all-rounder Cameron Green also got hit on the head, while bowling, so that’s another problem for Langer to solve.

But if their batting looks suspect with so many absences, their bowling doesn’t, with all the big names there.

Where’s Rohit Sharma?

The Mumbai Indians skipper, who has been in good form in Test matches recently, was injured during the IPL, missing a few games before returning for the Playoffs and final.

But that wasn’t enough to convince the Selectors that he was fit to travel with the rest of the team when they first went out.

It meant he missed both the ODI and T20 Series against Australia and he only arrived in Australia on December 13. He’ll now need to quarantine for two weeks so will be available for the Third and Fourth Tests, providing a good option as either an opener or in the middle-order once Kohli is gone.

Who’s going to open for India?

Who knows? Mayank Agarwal, Prithvi Shaw, KL Rahul and Shubman Gill, uncapped at Test level, are all in contention. Agarwal is probably the favourite to play but any one of the other three have a decent chance at partnering him.

After that it’s Chet Pujara, Kohli, Rahane and then Hanuma Vihari, with Rishabh Pant keeping wicket and batting at seven.
