A narrow win over the Melbourne Renegades last time out sealed the Hobart Hurricanes a playoff spot for the 2021-22 Big Bash League.

The Melbourne Stars, however, are simply playing for pride after that result confined them to another season outside the championship rounds of the competition.

Carried by the prolific Ben McDermott through large parts of the season, the Hurricanes can be enigmatic and difficult to predict. However, I think they will have too much firepower for the Stars, and so I will have a small wager on the visitors to win.

Stars Recent Form

Recent performances and results have actually been good for the Stars. They can count wins against the Strikers, the Renegades, and the Heat in their last five matches.

In their victory over the Heat on Sunday, the ever-dependable Joe Clarke smashed another half-century at the top of the order, hitting 62 runs from just 36 balls, while man-of-the-match Glenn Maxwell hit 37 and snared two wickets for 19 runs from his four overs.

They reached their target of 149 with eight wickets and 6.1 overs to spare. Franchise fans will be regretting their early-season form is costing them a place in the knockout stages. It feels like they are coming to the boil nicely – at exactly the wrong time.

If you fancy backing a Stars-related bet, you could do worse than backing Joe Clarke to score a 50 at 4.50 with Betway – he’s hit five half-centuries in the tournament this season – more than any other player.

Stars Team News

Glenn Maxwell will make his 100th BBL appearance when he leads his team out against the Hurricanes. The legendary all-rounder averages 31.89 at a strike rate of 147.38 with the bat – and will be hoping he can honour his landmark appearance with yet another big performance.

The Stars are likely to name an unchanged line-up from their latest victory against the Heat.

Player to Watch: Marcus Stoinis

The pressure may have been off, but Stoinis was back to his explosive self in the victory over the Heat.

He hit 29 runs from just 10 balls – including three massive sixes – to power the Stars over the line in pursuit of their 150-run target.

I reckon he could be an outside bet to land the man-of-the-match mantle – you can get odds of 10.0 at Betway if you want a longer price.

Stars’ Likely XI

Joe Clarke, Glenn Maxwell, Hilton Cartwright, Marcus Stoinis, Beau Webster, Joe Burns, Nathan Coulter-Nile. Ahmed Daniyal, Sam Rainbird, Adam Zampa, and Nick Larkin.

Hurricanes Recent Form

The Hurricanes are also on a good run of form – they have won three of their last four matches, including an impressive 9-run win over the in-form Sydney Thunder two game ago.

An opening stand of 93 between Ben McDermott and Matthew Wade set the stage for a comfortable 24-run win over the Stars just before Christmas – similar aggression at the top of the order will be required here to put the Stars’ bowling attack under instant pressure.

The Hurricanes have struggled when chasing targets this season – winning just two of six attempts at hauling in a total. They will want to bat first if they get the chance.

If they bowl first, my win probability for Stars vs Hurricanes will swing in the direction of the Stars

Hurricanes Team News

There were no new injury concerns after their victory over the Renegades on Monday morning, but there is likely to be some changes – particularly with a spot in the finals assured.

Gabe Bell could make his debut after he was selected in the 16-man squad – though Scott Boland, Nathan Ellis, and Joel Parris remain doubts.

Player to Watch: Tom Rogers

When the pressure ws on against the Renegades, with Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh pouring it on in pursuit of 182 – Tom Rogers stepped up to be the cool, calm, and collected figure the Hurricanes required.

He nabbed three crucial wickets – including Finch, who was motoring at 75 runs from just 52 balls before he was caught by Tim David – to take his team to the finals.

He may get a well-earned rest after his exploits – but if he plays, Rogers could be worth backing at 3.75 with Betway to be the top Hurricanes bowler.

Hurricanes’ Likely XI

Caleb Jewell, Ben McDermott, Matthew Wade, D’Arcy Short, Jordan Thompson, Tim David, Peter Handscomb. Josh Kann, Tom Rogers, Riley Meredith, and Sandeep Lamichhane.

Venue & conditions

It’s second of a double-header at the MCG on Wednesday. Marcus Stoinis loves this ground – he has hit 868 runs here at an average of 33.38, including a memorable record-breaking century for the Stars against the Sixers back in 2020.

The conditions look set to hold for a full day’s play – with temperatures reaching up to 28 degrees and a max wind speed of 13 kph.

Stars vs Hurricanes Head-to-Head

The Stars have a sizeable lead when it comes to the head-to-head record between these two! They have won ten of the 16 contests – seven of which have come when chasing a score.

Only once has a team registered more than 200 runs in this fixture – that came back in the debut season of the BBL when Luke Wright hit 117 runs from just 60 balls to help his team post 203/6.

Stars vs Hurricanes Toss Prediction

The Stars dominate at the toss in this fixture – winning 12 of the 16 bat flips between the two.

The main element of my Melbourne Stars vs Hobart Hurricanespredictions rests on the Hurricanes winning the toss and batting first. That’s why I’m backing them to call correctly here.

Recommended Bet: Back the Hurricanes to win @ 1.96 with Pure Win

I am going against conventional wisdom and backing a Hurricanes win. The visitors may have already made the finals, but the likes of Ben McDermott and Matthew Wade can keep confidence high by powering their team to a win.

Much depends on the toss – but presuming the Hurricanes bat first, they have it in their arsenal to pile a lot of pressure on a young Stars bowling attack.

I am placing my pre-match winner bet with Pure Win – they are the go-to sports betting site to place your cricket bets before a ball is bowled thanks to their generous prices.Read more about Pure Win by checking our Pure Win Review.
