Sri Lanka cricket team registered a historic win against India on Thursday by defeating them in the third T20 international to clinch the series 2-1.

This is Sri Lanka’s first T20I Series win since 2019 at the highest level and their first one over India in this format of the game. Get the full story below.

Hasaranga Stars in the Stunning Victory

On Wednesday, Wanindu Hasaranga moved up to the second spot in the ICC Men’s T20I Bowler Rankings. On Thursday, he turned 24 and celebrated his birthday in style by posting his bowling figures in the format with 4-9 in 4 overs.

The evening started with India winning the toss and electing to bat first. In a performance that was largely unexpected, India’s entire batting order collapsed to post their third-lowest total in T20 cricket at 81-8 in 20 overs.

Kuldeep Yadav was the team’s highest run-getter with 23 runs. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar also scored 14 and 16 runs respectively.

The rest of the players departed in single digits, including the three duck outs of Shikhar Dhawan, Sanju Samson, and Varun Chakravarthy.

Along with Hasaranga, Dasun Shanaka, Ramesh Mendis, and Dushamantha Chamerra also got four wickets between them.

A Comfortable Chase by Sri Lanka

Needing just 82 runs in 20 overs, Sri Lanka did not face a lot of difficulties in the chase.

Even though Avishka Fernando and Minod Bhanuka got out after adding just 30 runs between them, Dhananjaya de Silva and Hasaranga stepped up to get the job done, scoring 23 and 14 runs respectively.

Eventually, the Lankans won the match by 7 wickets with 33 balls to spare.

For his heroics and superb performance with the ball, Wanindu Hasaranga was awarded the Man of the Match and Man of the Series awards.

His bowling not only helped Sri Lanka clinch their maiden T20I series win over India but also their first series win against their neighbours in any format since a Test series at home in 2008. The hosts won that series 2-1 too.

As for India, coach Rahul Dravid expressed was positive that this experience will only help players grow and get better with time.

IPL, World Cup Next in Line

The action now moves to India’s tour of England, where India’s A-Team will face England in a five-match Test series.

That will be followed by the resumption of the Indian Premier League in September-October, to be immediately succeeded by the T20 World Cup.

On the other hand, Sri Lanka will play South Africa in a three-match T20I and ODI series in September.
