5 Candidates for IPL Player of the Series

David Warner of Sunrisers Hyderabad celebrates

When all is said and done, the end of the IPL season will see one team crowned as champions, one player picking up the Orange Cap for having scored the most runs and another banking the Purple Cap for being the competition’s top wicket-taker.

Andre Russell – Kolkata Knight Riders

Andre Russell - Kolkata Knight Riders is in the running for our bet on Player of the Series at the IPL

Last year the Kolkata Knight Riders had an indifferent season, missing out on the Play-Offs on net run rate.

But Russell certainly didn’t.

He was his side’s top wicket-taker with 11 in 14 games but it was with the bat that he really caused destruction.

He batted 13 times, scoring 510 runs (also the best for his side) with a high score of 80 and an average of 56.66.

Best of all was his strike rate:  204. Let’s take a minute to digest that: last season he scored at an average of over two runs for every ball he faced.

And they weren’t just quick, desperate runs in losing causes.

A 48 off 13 balls against Bangalore, an 80 off 40 against Mumbai and a 49 off 19 against Hyderabad were all match-winning knocks that helped him pick up four man-of-the-match awards in just 14 games last season, taking crucial wickets in some of them as well.

It wasn’t quite enough to get Kolkata into the Play-Offs but it was enough for him to be the IPL Player of the Series. He’ll have every chance again this year.

As will this fellow all-rounder…

Hardik Pandya – Mumbai Indians

Hardik Pandya of Mumbai Indians. Should you bet on him to be MVP at IPL 2020?

If you want to know what an  IPL all-rounder brings to the table these days, watch Hardik Pandya.

Often given two or three overs with the ball in the middle of the innings and normally batting at six or seven (occasionally being promoted up the order in certain circumstances), he’s the man who makes things happen.

Whether that’s breaking a settled partnership with the ball or blasting 35 off 18 with the bat, he’s proper box-office cricket and a key cog in Mumbai’s ultra-successful set-up.

Last season he topped his team’s batting averages (44.66) and chipped in with 12 valuable wickets, figures typical of a genuine world-class all-rounder.

With the Indians expected to make a good fist of defending their title, Hardik will have every chance to shine again.

Nothing shines like the sun, except maybe a Sunriser…

David Warner – Sunrisers Hyderabad

David Warner of Sunrisers Hyderabad is a potential for Man of the Tournament at IPL 2020

Sometimes you talk about someone being ‘a bit Marmite’.

Rather like the brown, sticky spread, you either love them or hate them.

Many cricket fans will hate David Warner.

He sledges opponents, he once punched the passive and likeable Joe Root in the face in a Birmingham bar for no good reason and of course worse was to come when he was found to have been the ringleader behind the Sandpapergate scandal, Warner masterminding the plan to scratch the ball with sandpaper to make it swing more and try to give his side an edge.

That last offence earned him a one-year ban from all cricket.

But if you’re a fan of Australia or the Sunrisers Hyderabad, you’re bound to love him.

An absolute run machine at the top of the order, capable of pulling, driving, hooking and flicking his way to 50 before the Powerplay overs are barely done, but also wise and canny enough to know that sometimes a well-paced 70 off 60 does the trick, as well.

He was last year’s top batsman by a country mile (692), scoring almost 100 runs more than KL Rahul who was the second-highest scorer and this despite Warner playing just 12 matches, while others played as many as 16.

He was recalled early from his IPL stint to prepare for the 2019 World Cup or he would have scored many more.

12 knocks in the IPL2019 yielded an unbelievable nine fifties, to go with a century.

Now with an extra year of cricket under his belt after a full year out of the game, he might go even better, with the Sunrisers Hyderabad fancied to go all the way.

Talking of fast-scoring openers…

Jos Buttler – Rajasthan Royals

Jos Buttler of Rajasthan Royals is in the running to be IPL 2020 Player of the Series

As we’ve just seen, a place in the final isn’t a prerequisite to winning the MVP award, and that’s good news for Jos Buttler.

His Rajasthan Royals are unlikely to make it to the Play-Offs, let alone the final, but he can cause a splash all by himself.

Opening the batting for the Royals over the past couple of seasons, he’s scored at a breakneck pace in the Powerplay Overs and got his side off to some fantastic starts, mixing up straight hits down the ground with reverse sweeps, scoops over his head and other unorthodox, but highly-effective shots.

With England players allowed to be at the IPL for as long as their teams are still in it, he’ll have a few more games to showcase his talent this time round.

Ravi Ashwin – Delhi Capitals

Ravi Ashwin of Delhi Capitals is a good bet for Player of the Series at IPL 2020

Ashwin has become something of the forgotten man of Indian cricket over the last couple of years.

It’s now almost two years since he played for India in either an ODI or T20I and though he’s still a big part of the Test set-up, he’s not the high-profile player he was in the past.

In the off-season, he moved from the Kings XI to the Delhi Capitals and will be responsible for being the senior bowler in the side.

With the Capitals looking a bit batting-heavy, he’ll need to be at his best himself in taking wickets in the middle-overs (and occasionally in the Power Plays) or at least stemming the flow of runs, while helping to mentor younger bowlers in the side.

The Capitals could be the surprise package of the IPL this season and if he’s the main man with the ball in a star-studded batting line-up, he may just have a sniff at the MVP award.
