Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals kickstarted their Indian Premier League 2021 campaign in style by beating Chennai Super Kings by 7 wickets in the Wankhede Stadium. Full match report below.
Chennai Batted Well but Delhi were just Superior
Delhi Capitals won the toss and Pant chose to field first.
Chris Woakes and Avesh Khan bowled superbly for the last year’s runners-up, getting the early wickets of Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad. They were also the most clinical bowlers with an economy rate of under 6.00.
Chennai were 7-2 in 2.1 overs, with Moeen Ali and Suresh Raina serving on the crease as two new batsmen. The duo put up a good fight with Raina scoring 54 off 36 while Ali scored 36 off 24.
By the 14th over, CSK were 123-4 and were on their way to a respectable score. After losing Ali and Raina, the likes of Ambati Rayudu, Ravindra Jadeja, and Sam Curran had brief cameos, each adding upwards of 20 runs.
Curran was particularly dangerous as he blasted a quick 34 off 15 balls in the final moments of the game to finally take Chennai Super Kings to 188-7.
A Ruthless Batting Display by Delhi
Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan opened for Delhi and were absolutely brilliant with the bat. The target was 189 runs in 20 overs and they made it seem like an entirely easy task.
The duo produced a partnership for 138 runs with Shaw adding 72 and Dhawan adding 85. Both the players batted with strike rates well above 150.
By the time CSK got their first wicket, the damage was already done – the Capitals were 138-1 in 13.3 overs.
When Dhawan got out, the ask was very little – 22 runs in 3.3 overs. Marcus Stoinis and Pant finished the job and took Delhi to a resounding, 7-wicket win.
Delhi Capitals scored 190-3 with 8 balls to spare. It was also a dream start for Pant’s captaincy, who registered a win over his idol M. S. Dhoni’s team.
With this kind of batting performance, the Capitals have sent warning shots to the rest of the teams. Needless to say, they are in for a solid run in the IPL 14.
