Kings XI Punjab IPL 2020 Preview & Betting Tips

Kings XI Punjab are one of the IPL’s least successful sides with just one final to show for their efforts.

A change of captaincy in the off-season from Ravi Ashwin (who left the franchise) to KL Rahul, means the India wicket-keeper batsman will have the tough task of being skipper, as well as their key man with the bat.

It’s a big ask for them to go from perennial strugglers to IPL champions unless there’s a massive and somewhat unlikely improvement.

Odds for Kings XI Punjab to win the IPL

IPL odds have the KXIP quoted as 10.0 joint-outsiders with the Rajasthan Royals. That price should come as no surprise to anyone who’s watched the Kings over the years. Not only has their squad never looked quite right in terms of balance but results have been poor, more often than not.

So you’re taking a big leap of faith if you think things are going to be any different this time for a side who’s struggled so badly in the past. If there’s one morsel of comfort, it’s that with so little expected of them, others sides might be complacent against them.

If you want to secure the KXIP best odds, Betway is the place to back them.

Kings XI Punjab  strengths & weaknesses

We’re not expecting miracles from the Kings this season but surely they have some strengths to speak of, don’t they? Their well-documented weaknesses are here, too.

Strengths

  • Glenn Maxwell is one of the world’s best T20 batsmen.
  • KL Rahul is a gun batsman and can bring some fresh ideas as captain.
  • Decent variety in terms of bowling options.

Weaknesses

  • Some Indian players with mediocre records in the IPL.
  • Lack of winning mentality from previous failures.

Has Kings XI won the IPL before?

Nope.

The Kings XI are yet to taste IPL glory and have only ever made one final.

That was back in 2014 when they even topped the Group Stages, winning 11 out of 14 matches and boasting an extremely impressive net run rate of 0.968, proof that not only did they win lots of matches but a lot of them were pretty comfortable, as well.

They lost the Qualifier 1 against Kolkata but made the most of their second bite of the cherry by beating Chennai in Qualifier 2.

There was nothing wrong with the score of 199 they posted in the final but Kolkata’s batters were just too good on the day, chasing that with three balls to spare.

Their only other Play-off appearance was in 2008, when they put in a shocker in the semi-final against Chennai, posting a paltry 112, which was understandably chased by the Super Kings without breaking a sweat.

How did KXIP perform in 2019?

Poorly. Another typical season of under-achievement, where they finished sixth out of eight, winning six matches out of 14 and missing out on the Play-Offs yet again.

KL Rahul and somewhat surprisingly Chris Gayle, had excellent seasons with the bat that included the India international scoring a century and Gayle ending up stranded on 99 not out in one game. But that was as good as it got.

Key players

Captain

KL Rahul had a fantastic season last time out.

He showed why India keep on trying to get him into their top-order in limited-overs cricket.

KL Rahul takes the King's captaincy for the 2020 IPL

Rahul has the technique, ability and power to be one of the world’s leading T20 batsmen. We’ll have to see if the captaincy affects his ability to pile on the runs this term though.

A strong KXIP performance will only be on the cards if Rahul is good both with the bat and in performing his new role as skipper.

Gun player

Glenn Maxwell has been one of the world’s most dangerous T20 players for the best part of a decade now.

Some of his best knocks have actually been in the colours of the Kings XI.

He’s also coming off the back of a fine season for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash. His unorthodox shots and monster sixes throughout were a joy to watch for any cricket fan.

He’s the real game-changer in the side among the batters, while his handy off-spinners can be deceptively tricky to get away.

Promising youngster

Sarfaraz Khan holds the distinction of being the youngest-ever player to feature in the IPl; he was just seventeen at the time when he played for Bangalore.

Last year he had a decent season for Kings XI, scoring 180 runs from eight appearances. His career strike rate of 138 suggests he can score as quickly as the very best.

Now 22, it’s time he starts turning fast starts and cameos into more substantial innings and match-winning knocks because he certainly has the ability to.

Team analysis

KXIP doesn’t exactly have what it takes to challenge for the title. New captain KL Rahul certainly has a difficult task on his hands here.

But, if the key men – himself, Maxwell, Shami, James Neesham, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Mayank Agarwal and Mandeep Singh – can be at their best, then they may just be able to make up for some weaknesses in other departments.

But then again, a team with a few world-class players countered by a few lacking in genuine quality is not a blueprint for a winning side.

It all means that the best Kings XI Punjab betting prediction is that they finish rock bottom of the Group Stages, available at a generous 5.0 with 10CRIC. At best, there are one or two sides in the IPL who look like they might struggle as much as them.

Kings XI Punjab FAQs

What odds are the Kings XI Punjab to win the IPL?

It’s 10.0 that the Kings XI win the IPL for the first time in their history. That means the only side as long in the betting as them, are the Rajasthan Royals. The Kings XI’s track record is one of the weakest of any IPL team, one of the reasons why their odds to win are so big, though a lack of quality local players is also a contributing factor.

What are the odds on Kings XI winning their first IPL 2020 match?

The Kings XI are 2.0 with Betway to beat the Delhi Capitals in their opening match on March 30. That doesn’t look a particularly good bet with Delhi boasting a strong squad ahead of the opening match while the Kings XI aren’t fancied to have a good season at all.

Should I bet on Kings XI Punjab to finish at the bottom of the group stages?

This is a very smart bet to make for sure. Given their track record and a lack of any world-class players, they are indeed unlikely to succeed. 10CRIC is offering very generous odds of 5.0 for them to finish rock-bottom.

Is KL Rahul a good bet to be IPL top batsman?

At odds of 10.0, KL Rahul has a decent chance of winning the Orange Cap. He has a fine record in the IPL, has played some excellent knocks for India over the past year or so in both ODIs and T20s and has the advantage of being an opening batsman, giving him more time at the crease in which to score his runs.

Who is the Kings XI captain?

KL Rahul will be the Kings XI skipper for this year’s Indian Premier League. The batsman-wicket keeper will be making his debut as Punjab’s captain after taking over from Ravi Ashwin, who was traded to the Delhi Capitals in the IPL’s off-season
