Punjab Kings IPL 2021 Preview & Betting Tips

Punjab Kings Betting

Punjab Kings are one of the IPL’s least successful sides with just one final to show for their efforts. A change of captaincy in the off-season from Ravi Ashwin (who left the franchise) to KL Rahul, means the India wicket-keeper batsman will have the tough task of being skipper, as well as their key man with the bat.

It’s a big ask for them to go from perennial strugglers to IPL champions unless there’s a massive and somewhat unlikely improvement. Let’s dive into our analysis and see what the best cricket betting sites think of their chances.

Punjab Kings best odds

IPL betting sites odds have the PBKS at 10.0 to win IPL 2021. That price should come as no surprise to anyone who’s watched the Kings over the years. Not only has their squad never looked quite right in terms of balance but results have been poor, more often than not.

So you’re taking a big leap of faith if you think things are going to be any different this time for a side who’s struggled so badly in the past. If there’s one morsel of comfort, it’s that with so little expected of them, others sides might be complacent against them.

If you want to get PBKS best odds, Betway is the place to back them.

Today’s PBKS match predictions

Has PBKS won the IPL before?

Nope. The Kings are yet to taste IPL glory and have only ever made one final.

That was back in 2014 when they even topped the Group Stages, winning 11 out of 14 matches and boasting an extremely impressive net run rate of 0.968, proof that not only did they win lots of matches but a lot of them were pretty comfortable, as well.

They lost the Qualifier 1 against Kolkata Knight Riders but made the most of their second bite of the cherry by beating Chennai in Qualifier 2.

There was nothing wrong with the score of 199 they posted in the final but Kolkata’s batters were just too good on the day, chasing that with three balls to spare.

Their only other Play-off appearance was in 2008, when they put in a shocker in the semi-final against Chennai Super Kings, posting a paltry 112, which was understandably chased by the Super Kings without breaking a sweat.

PBKS performance 2020

It was nothing if not an interesting season for the Punjab Kings last time out. They lost their first match in a Super Over to the Delhi Capitals, won their second against RCB but then went on a horrid run.

During this period they lost five consecutive games, mostly due to poor bowling. To be fair to them, they then won five in a row to give themselves a fighting chance of somehow making the Playoffs against all odds. But they didn’t quite pull it off, losing their last two to Rajasthan Royals and Chennai and ending up on 12 points in sixth place.

KL Rahul was brilliant, top-scoring in the whole IPL with 670 runs despite playing two games fewer than plenty of other players. Chris Gayle was also excellent, after sitting out a few matches at the start.

Glenn Maxwell on the other hand was hugely disappointing. He had a horrid season and it was no surprise when they released him at the end of the campaign.

PBKS performance 2019

They performed poorly. Another typical season of under-achievement, where they finished sixth out of eight, winning six matches out of 14 and missing out on the Play-Offs yet again.

KL Rahul and somewhat surprisingly Chris Gayle, had excellent seasons with the bat that included the India international scoring a century and Gayle ending up stranded on 99 not out in one game. But that was as good as it got.

A crown representing the captain at PBKS

Captain: KL Rahul

KL Rahul had a fantastic season last time out. It’s some achievement to be the IPL’s top runscorer, let alone in a struggling team, who played fewer matches because they didn’t make the Playoffs.
He showed why India keep on trying to get him into their top-order in limited-overs cricket.

Rahul has the technique, ability and power to be one of the world’s leading T20 batsmen. He may however consider not keeping wicket this season. Nicholas Pooran could take the gloves and give Rahul a little less work to do.

A strong PBKS performance will only be on the cards if Rahul is good both with the bat and in performing his new role as skipper.

He’s one of our picks for IPL player of the season 2021.

A trophy representing the gun player for PBKS

Gun player: Nicholas Pooran

Pooran is a class act who will continue to progress and surely become one of the world’s leading T20 batsmen if he isn’t already. A left-handed middle-order batsman who is a regular for the West Indies in white-ball cricket, he has immense power for someone quite slight and an excellent cricketing brain.

He was pretty good on occasion last year in the IPL for the Kings and will also have learnt from a successful stint in the Big Bash for the Melbourne Stars.

But Punjab need to realise that he needs to bat at three or four, not five. You need your best players at the crease for longer than just a few overs.

A medal representing the promising youngster at PBKS

Promising youngster: Ravi Bishnoi

Bishnoi had a decent season last year and was nominated for the Emerging Player of the Year award.

He’s a leg-spinner who will inevitably bowl the odd bad ball but he already showed glimpses of his maturity and skill last campaign.

More is expected of him in what will be his second IPL season.

Punjab Kings Team Analysis

PBKS doesn’t exactly have what it takes to challenge for the title. Captain KL Rahul certainly has a difficult task on his hands here and he knows it.

But, if the key men – himself, Mayank Agarwal, Chris Gayle, Nicholas Pooran, Mohammad Shami- can be at their best, then they may just be able to make up for some weaknesses in other departments. It’s not a bad starting point that they have in Rahul and Agarwal two classy local players at the top of the order.

But then again, a team with a few world-class players countered by a few lacking in genuine quality is not a blueprint for a winning side.

Speaking of Agarwal, he wasn’t quite as brilliant as Rahul last season but he was pretty good indeed. Yes, he finished last season more than 200 runs off his skipper but things could be different his time round.

We know he’s almost certain to open and he’s a classy player. At almost three times the prices of Rahul, he’s a good bet to be their top scorer.

A tick to represent the strengths of Punjab Kings

Strengths

  • World-class batsmen at the top of the order.
  • KL Rahul a three dimensional player as captain, wicket-keeper and gun batsman.
  • Won a fair few tight matches last season.

An X to represent the weaknesses of Punjab Kings

Weaknesses

  • Some Indian players with mediocre records in the IPL.
  • Look a bit light in the fast bowling department.

Punjab Kings FAQs

It’s 10.0 that the Punjab Kings win the IPL for the first time in their history. That makes them the outsiders. The Punjab Kings’ track record is one of the weakest of any IPL team.

The PBKS are 1.8 with 10CRIC to beat the Rajasthan Royals in their opening match on April 12.

Given their track record, they are a good bet to finish last. But RR and RCB could be worse than them, so best save your money for other bets.

At odds of 10.0, KL Rahul has a decent chance of winning the Orange Cap. He won it last year – proof of just how good he is in the IPL.
