Kolkata’s Batsmen Shine on the Sharjah Pitch
The fact that Kolkata Knight Riders have done something that not a whole lot of teams could do in the UAE only proves that they are the team to beat in the playoffs.
Batting first, KKR posted the highest first-innings total in Sharjah under conditions where other IPL teams have stuttered, stammered, and suffered.
The opening pair of Shubham Gill and Venkatesh Iyer propelled the team to yet another strong start, adding 94 runs between them.
By the time Rajasthan got their first wicket (Iyer), KKR were already at 79-1 in 10.5 overs. The foundation was built and all the rest of the batters had to do was build on it further.
KKR Top Batsmen
- Shubham Gill: 56 off 44; 4 4s, 2 6s
- Venkatesh Iyer: 38 off 35; 3 4s, 2 6s
RR Top Bowlers
- Chris Morris: 1-28, 4 overs
- Chetan Sakariya: 1-23, 4 overs
Rahul Tripathi scored 21 off 14 while Nitish Rana, Dinesh Karthik, and Eoin Morgan added 39 runs between them.
What’s also worth noting is the shoddy bowling display by Rajasthan Royals. With 17 extras and high economy rates, their bowling unit had a day to forget.
Same Story, Different Day for Rajasthan
The curse of Sharjah continues to haunt Rajasthan Royals. Just days after posting one of their lowest totals in the Indian Premier League (90-9 against Mumbai Indians), the RR boys once again found themselves in a similar situation.
Their final evening in this year’s IPL can be neatly summarised from the fact that eight of their 11 players got out in single digits – posting figures of 0, 6, 1, 0, 8, 0, 6, 1.
Shivam Dube and Rahul Tewatia were the only ones who added some fight to the Rajasthan Royals inning, scoring 18 and 44 runs respectively.
RR Top Batsmen
- Rahul Tewatia: 44 off 36; 5 4s, 2 6s
- Shivam Dube: 18 off 20; 1 6s
KKR Top Bowlers
- Shivam Mavi: 4-21, 3.1 overs
- Lockie Ferguson: 3-18, 4 overs
The entire inning was wrapped up at 85 all out in 16.1 overs, giving Kolkata Knight Riders a healthy win by 86 runs.
Their bowlers had a field day – Shivam Mavi picked up four wickets while Lockie Ferguson got three. Interestingly, both of them got two wickets in an over. Shakib al Hasan and Varun Chakravarthy also got a wicket each.
With this win, KKR are also set to finish fourth in the IPL table with 14 points and a net run rate of +0.587 – the highest in the league this season.
They will play Royal Challengers Bangalore in the playoffs this weekend unless Mumbai Indians beat can defeat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 171 runs tomorrow. An impossible feat, by the looks of it.
