Yet Another Display of Poor Batting by Punjab
KL Rahul-led Punjab Kings are boasting one of the strongest batting line-ups, at least on paper. However, in reality, it has been an absolute nightmare for them so far.
Six games in, PBKS have lost four of them and in three of those four defeats, Punjab had scored less than 125 runs in their inning.
The same trend continued against Kolkata Knight Riders too – Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul added 50 runs together but neither could stay on for long.
Chris Gayle departed at duck, Deepak Hooda and Moises Henriques left in single digits. Nicholas Pooran and Chris Jordan scored 19 and 30 runs respectively but that clearly wasn’t enough.
PBKS Top Batsmen
- Mayank Agarwal: 31 off 34; 1 4s, 2 6s
- Chris Jordan: 30 off 18; 1 4s, 3 6s
KKR Top Bowlers
- Prasidh Krishna: 3-30, 4 overs
- Sunil Narine: 2-22, 4 overs
For Kolkata, Krishan, Narine, and Pat Cummins had a field day as the trio picked up 7 wickets together. Shivam Mavi and Varun Chakravarthy got a wicket each.
Morgan Guides KKR to the Win
When Punjab Kings came down to defend their total, they were off to a good start. Having got the early wickets of Nitish Rana, Shubham Gill, and Sunil Narine, Kolkata Knight Riders were 3-17 in 3 overs.
Then came on Rahul Tripathi and Eoin Morgan, both of whom contributed upwards of 40 runs each.
KKR Top Batsmen
- Eoin Morgan: 47 off 40; 4 4s, 2 6s
- Rahul Tripathi: 41 off 32; 7 4s
PBKS Top Bowlers
- Moises Henriques: 1-5; 1 overs
- Mohammad Shami: 1-25; 4 overs
In fact, Morgan stayed on until the very end and played the captain’s innings to seal the win for KKR. His experience from playing in Ahmedabad during the India-England series must have definitely come in handy here.
Andre Russell and Dinesh Karthik had a couple of brief cameos toward the end. Ultimately, they ended the inning at 126-5 with 20 balls to spare.
That 5-wicket win puts KKR at 5th place in the table while Punjab Kings are at the 6th. Both teams share 4 points each but Kolkata lead on a net run-rate basis.
